Robbie Lawler still has to defend his title against Tyron Woodley at UFC 201 on July 30, 2016 in Atlanta, but Stephen Thompson is already looking forward to a championship (UFC) showdown against "Ruthless."
That's because "Wonderboy" is picking Lawler to retain his title against "The Chosen One" when the heavy hitters collide in "Hotlanta."
He explains why came to that conclusion and why he'd prefer to face Robbie during the UFC Fight Night 89 post-fight press conference via MMA Junkie.
"I would rather fight Robbie Lawler, and I think Robbie Lawler is going to win it. He's stayed active, Woodley hasn't, maybe there's a little bit of rust there. Tyron has been known to slow down in the later rounds, and Robbie Lawler, he gets stronger as the rounds go on, so I see Robbie winning that fight. I would love to fight (Lawler), hopefully in New York City; (that) would be a good place to do that. But yeah, I think Robbie Lawler would be the guy."
Strikers delight!
Though not guaranteed yet, Thompson may have earned his shot at the division strap after schooling former title contender, Rory MacDonald, in the main event of UFC Fight Night 89 -- which went down last night (Sat., June 18, 2016) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada -- for five full rounds (see it again here).
The win marked his seventh straight, and eight of nine overall inside the Octagon.
With stats like that, UFC matchmakers shouldn't have a problem deciding who gets next dibs for a championship fight at 170-pounds. Against, who, though still remains to be seen. But if all goes as planned, "Wonderboy" would be throwing heavy leather against Robbie at UFC 205 on Nov. 12, 2016 in New York.
