Top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight title contenders Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson met in a main event showdown last night (Sat., June 18, 2016) at UFC Fight Night 89 live on FOX Sports 1 from the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Canada.
As one of the quickest rising stars in mixed martial arts (MMA) today, Thompson was looking to get past MacDonald in order to lock down a title shot. MacDonald, who last lost to champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 189, was seeking vindication in 2016.
Through the majority of all five rounds, "Wonderboy" bewildered MacDonald. Like most fighters do, "Red King" waited for Thompson to throw the first stone. He was mesmerized by the unorthodox movement, but did offer some high-level imanari rolls that threatened the Karate kid's legs.
In classic form, Thompson began to pick MacDonald apart as he bloodied the Canadian's nose late into the fifth round. He would go on to to earn the unanimous decision win and essentially lock down No. 1 contender rights.
