There's no escaping politics. It drives this country from the inside out and seems to trickle into everything else we love.
So it shouldn't come as a surprise that the ongoing political battle being forged by presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has made its way over to the mixed martial arts (MMA) world. After all, Trump paved the way for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in Atlantic City, New Jersey, back when nobody else would entertain the misunderstood sport.
According to a recent report by The New York Times, Trump plans on having popular sports figures, not politicians, speak at the National Republican Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, at the Quicken Loans Arena from July 18-21, 2016. Fortunately for MMA and its biggest promotion, UFC, Trump plans on having one of the sport's most popular names speak on his behalf.
"Dana White, you know Dana White?" said Trump when addressing a crowd at his recent rally in Richmond, Virginia, on Friday (June 10, 2016). "U.F.C. Guy's a champion. These are champions."
The report also stated that Trump wants "winners," rather than "these people, these politicians who are going to get up and speak and speak and speak," to address the convention in July. Notable athletes like NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger, as well as Brian France, the chief executive of Nascar, were also mentioned as some of Trump's biggest supporters in the sports world.
Remember, White stated last year that he plans on voting for Trump considering how much he has done for the sport of MMA in the past
While Trump's campaign up to this point has been unorthodox to say the least, speaking at the Republican National Convention will be a great way for White, UFC, and MMA as a whole, to garner more interest and attention across the nation.
"Our country needs to see winners," added Trump. "We don't see winners anymore. We have a bunch of clowns running this country. We have people who don't know what the hell they're doing running our country."
