Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) made its way to Rotterdam, Netherlands, yesterday (Sun., May 8, 2016) with UFC Fight Night 87:" Overeem vs. Arlovski," which showcased a pair of Heavyweight fights between Alistair Overeem vs. Andrei Arlovski and Stefan Struve vs. Antonio Silva atop the FOX Sports 1-televised card.
Overeem wowed the hometown crowed by doing his best Karate Kid impression on his Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA stablemate before putting him out for the count. In the co-main event, Stefan Struve also gave the locals something to talk about, as he blitzed right through "Bigfoot," knocking out the massive Brazilian in all of 16 seconds (video replay here).
With that quick recap of last night's marquee bouts, it's now time to play matchmaker with our "Next Matches To Make."
Winner: Alistair Overeem
Who Should He Fight Next: Fabricio Werdum vs. Stipe Miocic winner
Currently the owner of the longest win streak in the Heavyweight division -- excluding division champion, Werdum -- Overeem has been knocking them out left and right, winning four straight including three impressive finishes. Cain Velasquez was set to get an instant rematch with Werdum, but since he will now be facing Travis Browne at UFC 200, his title shot could go up in flames with a loss or even a lackluster win. Overeem was more than confident that he was going to be awarded the next title shot, going as far as saying he would vie for the strap at UFC 205 this November in New York. Whether or not that actually happens, remains to be seen.
Winner: Stefan Struve
Who Should He Fight Next: Ben Rothwell
Sure, "Bigfoot" has looked like nothing more than a punching bag over the last two years, but a win over the former title challenger is still a decent notch under Struve's belt. We didn't get to see a whole lot of Struve's overall improvement in his game since the bout was over pretty quick, but maybe the 16 seconds of punches and elbows was all we -- and the rest of the division -- needed to see to know that the young contender is ready to make his run. Giving him someone like Ben Rothwell next might not be such a bad idea.
Winner: Gunnar Nelson
Who He Should Fight Next: Tarec Saffiedine
"Gunni" got back on the winning track with a brilliant display of overall mixed martia larts (MMA) skills. Setting the tone early with his standup game, Nelson eventually made his way down to the mat where Tuemnov simply looked like a fish out of a water.
Then again, most fighters not named Demian Maia look like that when up against Gunnar.
Expect Nelson to climb into the Welterweight rankings later today (Mon., May 9, 2016), which means his opponents will only get meaner and tougher. That said, a showdown against Tarec seems like a good pairing as both men are coming off impressive victories.
