Alistair Overeem (41-14-1) may very well have earned himself a shot at the UFC Heavyweight title after a huge victory at UFC Fight Night 87 earlier today (Sun. May 8, 2016) in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Overeem, 35, finished Andrei Arlovski (25-12 1NC) by technical knockout in the first round inside Ahoy Rotterdam, much to the delight of the hometown Netherlands fans. The win was the Dutch fighter's fourth in a row, defeating Junior dos Santos, Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve in his last three fights.
"We are going to get that belt in November, November 12 in Madison Square Garden," Overeem told Jon Anik after the bout. "Werdum, Stipe may the best man win. But I'm going to take on the winner. I'm going to beat that winner and then next year, we are going to defend the belt right here in Amsterdam Arena."
Arlovski came out aggressively and landed a few big shots on Overeem, who shelled up in defense along the fence. "The Pitbull" pressed Overeem against the cage once again, but "The Reem" did a good job of tying him up and avoiding any big strikes. Overeem clinched up and looked to deliver some knees, but the Belarusian veteran successfully defended and broke free.
Toward the end of the first, Overeem landed a nice outside trip and scored the takedown, moving into the former UFC Heavyweight's guard. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native landed a nice right hand, but that was all he would land before the round's conclusion.
In the second round the standup began to heat up with Overeem coming forward and throwing big kicks to the body and Arlovski answering right back. Moments later Overeem connected on a jump kick (reminiscent of "The Karate Kid") to Arlovski's jaw--which dislocated his big toe--and followed that up with a huge left hook to send Arlovski to the canvas.
"My toe was on a 45 degree angle and I was like 'no, my toe is not broken.' But luckily the medic here he just pulled it straight and it was good."
Overeem swarmed the fallen Arlovski on the ground and wailed away with big punches until referee Marc Goddard stepped in to wave the bout off.
A huge win for Overeem, who improves to 6-3 in UFC competition and has won three of his last four by way of knockout. The former Strikeforce Heavyweight champion was ranked No.3 in the Official UFC Rankings and could be in line to face the winner of Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic, who face off for the UFC Heavyweight title at UFC 198 on May 14, 2016.
Another tough loss for Arlovski, who suffers his second knockout in a row after being on the verge of a title fight several months ago. The 37-year-old veteran falls to 14-6 in the UFC, 4-2 in his second stint since returning in 2014.
