Gunnar Nelson (15-2-1) put forth an outstanding performance at UFC Fight Night 87 earlier today (Sun. May 8, 2016), defeating Albert Tumenov (18-3) by submission inside Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Nelson won the contest by rear-naked choke in the second round after completely dominating Tumenov in the opening frame with both his striking and grappling.
The official time of the stoppage came at 3:15 of the second round.
Nelson, 27, attacked first to start the Welterweight bout off landing a one-two combination, a nice left hook and a step-in sidekick. "Gunni" followed that up with a takedown and then transitioned right into full mount. The Icelandic fighter kept heavy top pressure on the Russian and delivered a few short elbows while maintaining control for the majority of the round.
Tumenov made it back to his feet with about 30 seconds left of the opening frame.
In the second, Tumenov defended a takedown and began to find some success with his striking, but Nelson landed another takedown on his very next attempt and easily passed the guard of the Russian before moving into full mount once again.
"Gunni's" grappling was just too much for Tumenov to handle.
After transitioning to Tumenov's back, Nelson secured a rear-naked choke soon after and forced the Russian to tap.
A fantastic win for Nelson, who looked sharp in all phases. He improves to 6-2 in UFC competition and should appear in the Official UFC rankings when they are released this coming week.
Tumenov, 24, was ranked No.13 and will likely plummet a spot or two. With the loss, Tumenov has his five-fight win streak snapped and falls to 5-2 in UFC competition.
