Top contender Wilson Reis believes he will dethrone UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

As it stands right now, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson is the very best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.

That is not an overstatement by any stretch of the imagination. With endless abilities and an evolving finishing rate, Johnson has successfully racked off eight-straight title defenses within the 125-pound division. He has dismantled every single contender the promotion has thrown his way.

Considering how potent and seemingly untouchable as Johnson is, many were surprised that Brazilian mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Wilson Reis will get the next crack at the champion at UFC 201 on July 30. But with the remains of nearly every single other flyweight contender scattered across Johnson's growing boneyard, Reis was literally the only other worthy name left in the division.

But just because he's being thrown into the lion's den doesn't mean the 31-year-old isn't ready to pull off the impossible.

"I have watched all his fights at flyweight, and I always see the same thing," said Reis in a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour (transcribed by MMA Fighting). "Of course, every time he’s looking better and better. It looks like his last fight… it was hard to judge the last fight. He looked really good, but I just don’t think Cejudo was really a match against him, you know? So it’s hard to judge on my point of view, but I’m definitely gonna shock the world on July 30."

While Reis (20-6) has lost only twice since 2011, his biggest UFC victory came in the form of a submission win over veteran Scott Jorgensen back at UFC 179. That's hardly the type of promotional resume needed to challenge a pound-for-pound king, but Reis believes he still has the inside scoop of how to beat "Mighty Mouse."

"I don’t want to point anything out now, but I see a lot of holes," added Reis. "I do see them, yeah. And I will showcase that on July 30."

UFC 201 will be headlined by a Welterweight title fight between champion Robbie Lawler and No. 1 contender Tyron Woodley.
