Live Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz fight updates, UFC 196: Round 1

Here we go! It wasn't the original plan, but Featherweight champion Conor McGregor packing on 25 pounds to fight Nate Diaz in a Welterweight scrap -- rather than injured Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos -- is truly a must watch pay-per-view (PPV) main event match.

McGregor made his walk to the Octagon to the deafening sound of Irish supporters, among others, while Diaz paced and hopped around in his corner with perhaps the meanest mug imaginable. These two have been bickering and insulting each other non-stop for 11 days straight and now it's finally time to walk the walk.

Diaz refused to even get in the referee huddle and the, accordingly, the pair did not touch gloves. McGregor came out with a winging left hand that Diaz was able to avoid. McGregor then launched a series of kicks, the last one Diaz used to grab a hold of McGregor and press him against the cage. McGregor broke free and the pair went back to the center of the Octagon where McGregor landed several stinging overhand lefts. Diaz pumped the jab, attempting to keep McGregor at a careful distance. Both fighters play footsie as McGregor continues to push a very aggressive pace. He missed with and uppercut, several, as Diaz back away. The pair exchange more shots as Diaz's face appears to be read and showing signs of blood above the right eye. McGregor landed another looping left, and another as Diaz attempts to circle away from the shots. Diaz was able to grab a single and pull McGregor down to the canvas with 30 seconds to go, but McGregor defended nicely as Diaz fished for a leg submission just as the round ended.
