Jake Mathews (10-1) submitted Johnny Case (22-5) with only seconds remaining in the bout at UFC Fight Night 85 earlier tonight (Sat. March 19, 2016).
Mathews, 21, defeated Case by rear-naked choke inside Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia. The official time of the stoppage came at 4:45 of the third round.
In the second Case stalked the Australian, who seemed content to wait and counter strike. Mathews landed a big body kick that hurt case and "Hollywood" shot in on a takedown. Mathews nearly locked up a triangle choke, but Case managed to posture up and avoid the submission. Case then stood up and rained down a big right hand from a ride position and began landing big punches as Mathews turtled up. Mathews made it back up to his feet with just under a minute left. "The Celtic Kid" landed another big body kick that hurt Case, forcing the Iowa native to shoot in for another takedown before the round came to a close.
Mathews pressed Case up against the fence in the opening minute of the final round, but could not capitalize. Mathews began targeting the body with punches and landed a stiff left hook. Case tried to take Mathews down, but the Aussie deftly avoided several attempts.
Mathews landed a knee to the body and the two locked up along the fence. Mathews took the back of Case when they went to the ground and locked up a rear-naked choke, but couldn't close the deal. However, on his second try he secured the submission for good.
A fantastic win for Mathews, who snapped Case's 12-fight win streak. The victory improves Mathews record to 4-1 in UFC competition. Case 26, had won his first four fights in the UFC and now falls to 4-1 with the promotion.
