It was a lackluster co-main event, but someone had to be named a victor.
Roy Nelson (22-12) defeated Jared Rosholt (14-3) last night (Sat. Feb. 6, 2016) at UFC Fight Night 82 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
It wasn't pretty and there weren't many strikes of huge significance, but Nelson, 39, landed more and got the approval of all three judges to earn his eighth career victory in UFC.
Both fighters were relatively cautious for the opening two minutes of the round. Nelson was walking down Rosholt, who was noticeable respectful of the punching power of "Big Country." Rosholt did land more strikes over the course of the first five minutes, but none of great significance.
Rosholt tried for a takedown to start the second, but the No. 11-ranked UFC Heavyweight easily evaded it. With little more than three minutes left in the round, Nelson landed a nice outside low kick that wobbled Rosholt. Nelson continued to stalk Rosholt, but when they engaged Rosholt, ranked No. 12, circled out to reset.
Nelson landed a solid outside low kick to begin the final round and briefly flirted with a takedown attempt. Nelson came forward with some big overhand punches, but Rosholt was able to get out of the way. The Team Takedown-trained fighter went in on a takedown attempt, but couldn't turn the corner on Nelson, who defended expertly. Nelson began to swing violently with seconds left but could not connect.
It wasn't pretty, but Nelson badly needed a win to get off the snide and snap his three-fight losing streak. He is now 8-8 inside the Octagon. A fighter of similar caliber to Rosholt will likely be up next.
For Rosholt, he has his three-fight win streak snapped with the loss and falls to 6-2 in UFC.
