UFC on FOX 18 ratings down because Anthony Johnson is a destroyer of worlds

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

"Rumble" young man, rumble.

UFC on FOX 18 had good (but not great) ratings for the "Johnson vs. Bader" mixed martial arts (MMA) extravaganza, averaging a respectable 2,685,000 viewers last Saturday night (Jan. 30, 2016) inside Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

MMA Fighting explains why:

The show would have likely done right about the usual numbers except the main event with Anthony "Rumble" Johnson vs. Ryan Bader in a light heavyweight title contenders fight only lasted 86 seconds. The quick fight meant no time to build a rating, and more importantly, the main event ended well before 10 p.m. The FOX shows usually do their best numbers when the main events goes long, as the numbers always get stronger after 10 p.m.

UFC on FOX 18 was down slightly from the previous three FOX events; however, the UFC on FOX 18 "Prelims" -- headlined by a welterweight battle pitting Tarec Saffiedine opposite Jake Ellenberger -- posted its best number (702,000) in two years.

Bellator was also down last weekend, pulling 566,000 viewers on Spike TV, likely due to the late withdrawal of Josh Koscheck.
