UFC 196 live stream results: 'McGregor vs Diaz' play-by-play updates

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to pull the trigger on its most talked about pay-per-view (PPV) event of the year, UFC 196: "McGregor vs. Diaz," which takes place this Saturday night (March 5, 2016) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Thanks to an unfortunate (and frighteningly commonplace) set of circumstances, the lightweight title fight between Conor McGregor and Rafael dos Anjos has transmogrified into a welterweight showdown pitting "Notorious" against late replacement Nate Diaz.

That said, UFC 196 will still feature a compelling championship contest, as women's bantamweight queenpin Holly Holm makes her first title defense against the rough-and-tumble Miesha Tate, with the winner expected to move forward to face ex-champ Ronda Rousey later this year.

Diaz lands a jab to the body, eats a left to the body. Two minutes in. McGregor looking for the uppercut, lands a leg kick and eats a right hook. Round 2: Tate ducks under a straight left and hits a takedown, quickly taking side control. Holm regains half guard, eats an elbow One minute in. Short shots from "Cupcake." Tate briefly threatens an arm-triangle. Tate digs in some elbows to the body. Two minutes in. Tate continues to chip away with elbows. Two minutes to go.

Round 2: ViIlante staying busy with the kicks. Latifi answers with some low kicks of his own. Overhand left connects. Latifi catches an eyepoke, no pause. One minute in. Latifi catches a kick and hits a lovely suplex. One hook in for the Swede. Villante scrambles his way out and they stand. Two minutes in. Latifi with a right downstairs and left hook up top. Round 3: Slow start to the round. One minute in. Latifi with a right downstairs. Latifi shoots and gets in on Villante's hips, but can't complete the takedown. Villante with a knee downstairs. They separate. Two minutes in. Big overhand left connects for Latifi. Wheel kick attempt falls short. Huge overhand right connects for Latifi, but Villante shrugs it off. Two minutes to go.

Round 2: Lawlor scores an early takedown, only for Anderson to pop back up. Cuffing right hook from Lawlor. Straight right lands for Anderson, straight left lands for Lawlor. Brief clinch exchange. One minute in. counter right lands for Anderson. Low kick from Anderson. Two minutes in. Right hand lands for Anderson. 1-2 connects. 1-2 once again. Lawlor zaps him with a straight left. Lawlor's doing a good job of retaining half guard but isn't finding any success improving position. John McCarthy elects to stand them up with a minute to go. Anderson connects with a leg kick. Straight right. Anderson lands one more right before the bell. 10-9 Anderson.

Round 2: Nunes opens up with kicks early, prompting a straight left from Shevchenko. Shevchenko catches a body kick and a scramble ensues with Nunes winding up on top. Nunes immediately works to pass. One minute in. Half guard. Hammerfists from Nunes. Shevchenko tries a sweep, gets flattened back out. Nunes stil looking to pass. Two minutes in. Elbows and punches by the Brazilian. Shevchenko is bloodied up. The ground-and-pound continues. Now she's in side control. Two minutes to go.

Shevchenko briefly gets to her feet, only to get wrangled back down. Hard blows by the Brazilian. Side control for Nunes. She moves to mount, then takes the back and locks up the body triangle. One minute to go. Nunes looking for a crank. Shevchenko manages to survive and spins into guard at the bell. 10-9 Nunes.

Round 3: Nunes looks for a level change early, but eats some strikes and gets taken down into side control. Short shots by Shevchenko. One minute in. Shevchenko goes tof rhte mounted crucifix and looks for an Americana. Elbows land for her, but Nunes kicks her off  and returns to her feet. Nunes is visibly tired. Two minutes in. Hard knees by Shevchenko when Nunes tries to change levels. 1-2 from Shevchenko. Nunes ducks a spinning backfist and again tries to change levels. Nunes using a three-point stance to avoid knees, gets punched a bunch before standing. Two minutes to go.

Good punches by Shevchenko. Leg kick from Nunes, then a failed single-leg attempt. Shevchenko looking for combinations. One minute to go. Nunes trips her up with a leg kick. Superman punch from Shevchenko, right hook from Nunes. Nunes eats a series of left hands. Nunes tries a desperate shot at the bell. 10-9 Shevchenko.

Round 1: Thatch opens with a leg kick. Body kick connects. Leg kicks land as he avoids a clinch. Another low kick. One minute in. Siyar checks the next leg kick. Bahadurzada storms after him with right hands, lands a few. Thatch to the body, then a 1-2 upstairs. They tie up and Thatch presses him against the fence. Two minutes in. Elbow by Thatch on the break. Solid shots inside by Bqhadurzada and now Thatch is chasing the takedown. Thatch comes back with a heavy knee to the head. Spinning elbow and a hard knee. Two minutes to go.

Thatch shoots in and takes Siyar down into side control. Thatch looks for a guillotine, which allows Siyar to sweep. Thatch regains guard and looks for a triangle, but winds up eating punches. One minute to go. Thatch scoots to the fence and grabs onto a Kimura grip. Bahaurzada cracks him with some more good punches as he scrambles up. 10-9 Bahadurzada.

Round 2: Hard front kick and right hooks from Thatch. Straight left cracks Siyar and he changes levels for a takedown into guard. One minute in. Thatch trying to make space without success. Short shots by the Afghan. Two minutes in. The referee stands them up; can't say I agree with that. Low kicks by Thatch and a hard right hand. Siyar lands some hard blows in the clinch and scores another takedown on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Ground-and-pound from Bahadurzda. Thatch turns for an armbar, nothing there. One minute in. Bahadurzada keeping up the offense. 10-9 Bahadurzada.

Round 3: Overhand lands for Bahadurzada. Counter right and knees by Siyar. Heavy left hand connects and Thatch falls to his back. Bahadurzada whacks away at him, then settles in guard. One minute in. Thatch not doing much to get back to his feet. Siyar with some body shots. The referee stands them up for some reason with less than two minutes to go. Siyar circling. Siyar lands some punches and hits yet another takedown into guard. Two minutes to go.

More short ground-and-pound by the Afghan. Half guard now. Siyar sets up an arm-triangle and easily passes to side control, drawing an instant tap.

Head kick attempt from Taleb. He catches a body kick, takes Silva down, and connects with a hammerfist before Silva scrambles up. Silva fakes a touch of gloves and cracks him with a left hook. Both whiff on some big shots. One minute to go. Low kicks from Taleb. Body kick connects. Taleb sprawls on a shot and lands a knee before the bell. 10-9 Taleb.

Round 2: Low kick from Taleb to start. One minute in. Leg kick from  Silva almost countered. Overhand right by Silva, straight right by Taleb. Body kick and right hand. Taleb catches a kick and lays out Silva with a straight right. Damn.

Final result: Taleb def. Silva by KO (punch)

Round 1: Miranda tosses out high kicks early. Guimaraes shoots in on the fence. Miranda fighting off the takedown. Solid sprawl. One minute in. Guimaraes gets him down and a scramble ensues. Miranda makes it back to his feet and avoids danger until the eref separates them. Two minutes in. Stiff jabs from Miranda. Counter right from Guimaraes. Leg kick from Guimeraes, body kick from Miranda. Flurry by Guimaraes and he shoots once again. Two minutes to go.

Short knees by Guimaraes against the fence. Browne elbows by Miranda, who tries to take advantage but gives up double underhooks. One minute to go. Referee separates them. Leg kicks by Miranda and a hard right hand. Body shot met by a right hook from Guimaraes. 10-9 Miranda.

Round 2: Guimaraes wading forward, tossing out kicks. He flurries and shoots in. Miranda briefly gets the Plum, then lands a series of Browne elbows. Miranda blasts him with a headkick and punches on the break and the referee steps in as Guimaraes stumbles to the floor.

Final result: Miranda def. Guimaraes by TKO (strikes)

Round 1: Swatting punches land for Skelly, then a 1-2. Elkins gets him to the fence with double underhooks. They trade knees to the body. One minute in. Dirty boxing from Elkins. Skelly circles away. Skelly pops him with a jab, then some nasty punches and a knee. They jockey for position against the fence until Elkins trips Skelly to the mat. Skelly spins for a heel hook, but Elkins survives. Two minutes in. Hard upkick lands tor Skelly, who transitions to the other leg. Elkins gets free and lands some knees as Skelly makes it to his feet. Two minutes to go.

Skelly reverses position and separates. Left hook connects for Elkins, who lands some uppercuts in the clinch. Long right hand by Skelly. They tie up again. One minute to go. Knees to the body from both men, favoring Elkins. They separate again. They trade flurries and Elkins takes him to the fence again. 10-9 Skelly.

Round 2: Hard counter hook lands for Skelly early on. Flurry from Elkins, Right hook by Elkins, who shoots in and puts Skelly on his back. Skelly working towards the back. One minute to go. Elkins winds up on top in guard. Ground-and pound from Elkins. Skelly turning for a leg , nothing there. Two minutes to go. More solid punches by Elkins. Rear waistlock. Relentless punching from Elkins. Skelly makes it back to his his feet. Two minutes to go.

Round 3: Skelly looks visibly exhausted. Elkins pressing forward, lands a body kick. Elkins dicks a right hand and grabs the rear waistlock.  Elkins drags Skelly to the mat. Skelly spins to face him and makes it back to his feet. One minute in. Elkins pressing him against the fence, trips him down into half guard. Skelly gets to turtle position and Elkins takes his back. Skelly escapes and returns to his feet. Two minutes in. Left hook lands for Elkins. Hard right hand by Elkins. Elkins hits a slam on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Elkins takes his back and looks for the rear-naked choke. Skelly makes it back to his feet and turns to face him. Skelly looks for a takedown of his own, gets sprawled on. One minute to go. Side control now. Back to north-south. Saggo looking for spiderweb position, loses it. Salas tries to scramble and gives up his back. One hook in for Saggo. One minute in, full back control tor Saggo. Saggo flattens him out and goes to work with punches until Yves Lavigne steps in.

Round 1: Fake glove touch by Ishihara into a body kick. Superman punch lands. Erosa knocks him over with a teep. Extreme aggression from Ishihara early, running in with hard shots.
