UFC Fight Night 83 results: Cody Garbrandt clocks Augusto Mendes, scores nasty first round finish

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Cody Garbrandt (8-0) remains undefeated in his young professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

"No Love" defeated Augusto Mendes at UFC Fight Night 83 earlier tonight (Sun., Feb. 21, 2016) inside CONSOL Energy Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The bout was at a Catchweight of 142 pounds and Mendes took the bout on less than a week's notice.

Garbrandt, 24, opened things up with a kick to the body to get things started. Mendes, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, pulled guard and nearly got Garbrandt's arm, but the Ohio native was able to avoid any trouble. "No Love" continued to find success on the feet and with a little under a minute left in the round connected with a left hook and right cross, which dropped Mendes to the canvas. Garbrandt swarmed in to finish the Brazilian off on the ground and referee Mario Yamasaki called it a day.

The official time of the stoppage came at 4:18 of the first round.

A great win for Garbrandt, who has won all three of his UFC fights. Mendes tastes defeat for the first time in his career in his UFC debut. "Tanquinho" should be commended for taking the fight on such short notice and the 32-year-old Brazilian may very well get another opportunity for doing so.
