Shooto Brazil 61 Preview

Good evening Maniacs.

In less than 24 hours time (5:00 p.m. Eastern) MMA event will air live on UFC Fight Pass. How many people will watch it? I don't know... are there any numbers from the UFC or anyone as to the amount of people watch the regional events on Fight Pass? They are constantly acquiring new promotions so it seems like other promotions are viewing it as a good business model.

On to the preview and predictions:

Main Event: Ronny Markes vs. Cassio de Oliveira

Markes is 15-3 and won his last fight in the WSOF in August 2014 over Cully Butterfield. He hasn't fought since then due to for various reasons to include hospitalization prior to weighing into for a fight with current WSOF Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Champion David Branch. Markes was cut from the UFC in 2014 after two straight stoppage losses to Yoel Romero and Thiago Santos. He started his UFC career 3-0 with three straight decision wins. Markes was good but not very exciting. He started his career with multiple finishes but hasn't stopped an opponent since 2011. Training out of Nova Uniao he has decent Muay Thai and a good Brazilian JiuJitstu game.

Oliveira is 16-6-1 and has lost 2 straight with being 2-3 in his last five. Oliveira has never fought outside of Brazil since making his debut in 2009. From what I can tell his biggest win is over 2-time M-1 veteran Joaquim Ferreira. Oliveira has 12 stoppage wins with 10 of them being by submission including 5 "leg lock" submissions.

Prediction:

Markes has been stopped and dropped multiple times by powerful strikers and not so powerful strikers. But with only 2 KO/TKO stoppages in 23 pro fights I doubt Oliveira will win this fight with his hands or feet. Markes should have the advantage pretty much everywhere even though Oliveira has 10 subs. Expect Markes to keep the fight mostly on the feet to cruise to a decision.

Co-Main Event: Benito Tavares vs. Alcides Nunes

Tavares is 5-3 with 3 submissions and 1 KO. He's also 38 years old and has only been fighting since 2011. He most recently fought and lost to 2 time UFC veteran Rony Torres; a man 9 years his junior who at the time had a 28-5 record. That was in May of 2015.

Nunes is 6-0 and is pretty much the total opposite of his opponent. The 27 year old is a prospect with 5 stoppages in 6 wins including 4 KO/TKO's. Nunes is 2-0 in Shooto and is likely being groomed to move up in the MMA world. Training out of Nova Uniao I think we can expect to see him in the UFC, Bellator or another larger organization within a couple years if not sooner.

I'm all in on Nunes winning this fight by punches early. Tavares hasn't been stopped by strikes yet but it seems like he's being brought in as an opponent to the rising prospect.

Other interesting prospects on the card include:

6-1 Carlos Silva vs. 4-3 Thiago Barbosa

7-2 Maycon Silvan vs. 6-4 Lucas Rodrigues

Quick Picks for entire 12 fight card:

1) Ronny Markes def. Oliveria by decision
2) Alcides Nunes def. Benito Tavares by KO round 1
3) Rafael Ramos def. Diogo Pimeta by decision
4) Thiago Silva def. Eliandro Libania by decision
5) Huinderton Barbosa def. Renato Rangel by submission
6) Diego Domingos def. Flavio Viana by KO round 2
7) Carlos Silvs def. Thiago Barbosa by TKO round 2
8) Maycon Silvan def. Lucas Rodrigues by submission
9) Eduardo Thai def. Luiz Carlos by KO round 1
10) Geisa Veloso def. Kakau Costa by decision
11) Carlos Ribeiro def. Antonio Monteiro by submission
12) Casar Alameida def. Thiago Dreamer by KO round 1.

Anyone else plan on watching? Have a great weekend Maniacs!
