While Cody Garbrandt surprised many in his title victory over Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz last night (Fri., Dec. 30, 2016) at UFC 207 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, former 135-pound titleholder T.J. Dillashaw looked equally impressive in his unanimous decision win over knockout artist John Lineker. According to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White, Dillashaw did more than enough to earn the next crack at 135-pound gold.
"T.J. Dillashaw said if he doesn't get the shot this whole thing is rigged (check that out here), so I think I'm going to give the rematch to Dominick Cruz just to make him right," White jokingly said during the UFC 207 post-fight show on FOX Sports 1. "Dillashaw made it look easy against a very tough guy, a scary guy that can knock you out at any moment. Dillashaw is a total conspiracy theorist and says nutty stuff all the time, but yes, he's probably next in line."
White added that Dillashaw could get the next title shot even if he sat out for a Garbrandt vs. Cruz rematch, which seems fairly likely considering Cruz hadn't lost since 2007 and remains the most accomplished Bantamweight of all time. However, Dillashaw narrowly lost his title to Cruz earlier this year via split decision and has looked fabulous in victories over Lineker and Raphael Assuncao at UFC 200.
Whatever happens, the division is finally experiencing some rejuvenation with the triangle of hatred between new champion Garbrandt and old champions Cruz and Dillashaw.
