Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) could take one step closer to determining the next No. 1 contender at 155 pounds, but only if Tony Ferguson accepts a UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) showdown against Khabib Nurmagomedov on March 4, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
That's according to "The Eagle."
"The UFC asked me about this fight, March 4, UFC 209, and I said yes, I want to fight this," Nurmagomedov told RT Sport. "I want to take this fight. I want to fight with Tony and we, everybody, my team, are waiting for his answer."
No word yet if the proposed bout would be for an interim title, something that may be a consideration after Jose Aldo unexpectedly entered the fray. "Junior" was angling for another crack at Conor McGregor after "Notorious" captured the division crown -- then took an extended leave of absence.
Nurmagomedov wasn't having it.
"I think [Ferguson] is a real high level fight in the lightweight division right now," he continued. "I think UFC before never made this kind of fight because nine win streak versus eight win streak, this has never happened before. i think this is a very big fight. Everybody wants to watch this fight and I want to take this fight."
The ball, at least for the time being, appears to be in "El Cucuy's" court.
