UFC on FOX 22 results: Paige VanZant vs Michelle Waterson live stream play-by-play updates

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will return to the FOX network with UFC on FOX 22: “VanZant vs. Waterson,” taking place this Saturday night (Dec. 17, 2016) inside Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.

As you might assume from the name of the promotion’s latest mixed martial arts (MMA) event, UFC on FOX 22 will be headlined by the strawweight showdown pitting Paige VanZant against Michelle Waterson.

In the UFC on FOX 22 co-main event, new kid on the 170-pound block, Mickey Gall, tries to keep his momentum going against fellow division prospect Sage Northcutt. Elsewhere on the card, Urijah Faber has his final UFC fight against Brad Pickett.

Round 1: Early side kicks from Waterson, right hand lands. One minute in. Another hard right hand from Waterson, who’s moving well so far. Jab exchange. They clinch and VanZant flubs a head-and-arm throw, leading to a clinch. Head-and-arm throw for Waterson, who takes the back and locks up the body triangle in short order. Two minutes in. VanZant trying to use the cage to her advantage. Waterson has it under her chin. VanZant handfighting well thus far. Waterson adjusts her grip and VanZant goes to sleep.

Final result: Waterson def. VanZant by technical submission (rear-naked choke)

170 lbs.: Mickey Gall vs. Sage Northcutt

Round 1: Quick exchange and they clinch. Northcutt lands a knee as Gall shoots. He gets Northcutt to his back and “Super” grabs rubber guard. Gall passes to half guard, threatening a guillotine. Two minutes in. Now side control. for Gall. Northcutt explodes out and Gall latches onto a guillotine. Northcutt defends and gets his head free, taking half guard. Two minutes to go.

Northcutt stands over him and they talk trash at each other until Herb Dean stands him. Body kick and left hand from Northcutt. Gall catches a side kick and takes Northcutt down into guard with a minute to go. Gall postures up for some ground-and-pound, then passes to mount when Northcutt threatens an omoplata. 10-9 Gall.

Round 2: Hard right hand from Northcutt and Gall pulls guard. More trash talk. Good left hook by Sage. Overhand right drops Northcutt! He shoots and Gall immediately takes the back, locking up the body triangle. After a brief struggle, he forces his forearm under Sage’s chin and draws the tap.

Final result: Gall def. Northcutt by submission (rear-naked choke)

135 lbs.: Urijah Faber vs. Brad Pickett

Round 1: Low kick from Pickett. 3-2 lands for Faber as Pickett weaves in. 2-3 lands. One minute in. Leg kick trips Faber up for a moment. Faber ties up, lands a knee before they separate. Leg kick lands. Lead right. Pickett still looking for that low leg kick. Two minutes in. Another lead right connects for Faber. Good entry into a single-leg, can’t get it and Pickett shoots in on the fence. Faber scrambles up and destroys Pickett with a left hook. Big John really could have stopped it there, but Faber takes the back.

Faber pounding away with right hands, looking for the choke. Pickett turns and gives up full mount. Nice elbows from Faber. One minute to go. Faber retakes the back, can’t get the finish before the bell. 10-9 Faber.

Round 2: Left hook and knee from Faber. Pickett with a left hook of his own and a low kick. Lead right lands for Faber. One minute in. More low kicks from Pickett. Faber threatens a single-leg, can’t get it, lands a right cross. Pickett fires a knee and Faber uses it to take him down into guard. Pickett scrambles up and shoots in, Faber sprawls. Two minutes to go.

Pickett avoids the rear-naked on the way up and separates. Faber catches a leg kick, can’t use it. Straight right from Faber and he trips Pickett up. He locks up a guillotine when Pickett shoots, can’t complete it. One minute to go. Right hand and jab for Faber. Faber takes the back before the bell. 10-9 Faber.

Round 3: Faber looks for head kicks early, then shoots in behind a right hand and puts Pickett on his back once again. Elbows from “The California Kid.” One minute in. Pickett scrambles up and Faber sprawls before they separate. Left hook lands for Faber, who hits another takedown with the same right hand setup. Faber passes to half guard and Pickett turns in, going to turtle. Two minutes in. Faber threatens the guillotine and uses it to establish side control. Elbows by Faber on the battered Englishman. Pickett scrambles his way back to the feet about thirty seconds later. Left hook from Pickett knocks an off-balance Faber over, drawing a smile and an extended tongue. Uppercut from Faber. One minute to go. Faber ducks in for a well-timed takedown attempt, lands a knee as they separate. Left hook by Faber. Pickett tries a flying knee and Faber uses it to take the back. 170 lbs.: Alan Jouban vs. Mike Perry

Round 1: Perry comes out slinging kicks. Perry gets stung by an early counter, shakes it off. Head kick attempts from Jouban. Low kick connects. One minute in. Good body kick by Jouban. Low kick from Perry. Jouban to the body. Head kick attempt by Perry. Perry still pursuing. Head kick from Jouban, who eats a knee and ties up. Rear waistlock for Jouban, who completes a takedown. He’s low on Perry’s hips, can’t keep him down. Two minutes to go.

Head kick lands for Jouban and Perry catches it, can’t use it. Another straight left from “Brahma.” Check hook conects. Two minutes in. Perry lands a body kick, eats a low kick and a body kick in return. Perry ducks a head kick. Nasty combination by Jouban lands clean, then a low kick. Two minutes to go.

Perry only offering the occasional single shot in return. Jouban shoots for a single-leg, can’t get it. Body kick lands for him. 185 lbs.: Luis Henrique da Silva vs. Paul Craig

Round 1: Craig comes out kicking and they tie up on the fence. Henrique holding him against the cage. One minute in. Nice uppercuts by Craig. They separate, Henrique ties up again and they exchange. Craig scores a takedown after the next separation. Two minutes in. Half guard for the Bearjew against the fence. Nice elbows, exacerbating the cut. Henrique looking for a sweep, transitions to a single-leg but flubs a takedown and lands on the bottom in side control. Henrique makes it back up, but finds himself in a guillotine. Two minutes to go.

Craig still looking for it off of his back. Henrique works his way free and sets up in guard. One minute to go. He allows Craig up and lands a hard right hand. Henrique tries a throw and lands on the bottom again. 10-9 Craig.

Round 2: Craig comes out throwing. Henrique lands a counter right and Craig shoots in. Henrique reverses position on the fence. Knee from Craig. They separate a minute in. More kicks from Craig; the Brazilian looks tired. Counter right again from Henrique. Craig pulls guard with an overhook. Craig looks for a triangle when Henrique dives and transitions to a good-looking armbar. He loses his grip on the wrist, but regains it and cranks to force the tap.

145 lbs.: Mizuto Hirota vs. Cole Miller

Round 1: Low leg kick from Miller and a blocked body kick to start. Hirota slugs his way inside and scores a takedown. Miller shoots and Hirota sprawls before they separate. Good left hook by Miller. 1-2 drops Hirota and Miller pursues. Hirota shoots in and avoids a choke on the way down. Short left hands by the Japanese veteran. Miller kicks him off and stands. Body kick by Miller. Two minutes in. Miller sticking out front kicks to maintain range. Hirota with a combination. Punch to the leg, kick to the same leg. Straight right by Miller. 2-3 and a takedown for Hirota. Miller looking for upkicks, nice punches by Hirota before he lets him up. Two minutes to go.

Hirota hits another takedown into full mount. One minute to go. Hirota on top in half guard, landing punches. Miller dodges a big punch, can’t use it to stand. 10-9 Hirota.

Round 2: Low kicks from Hirota to start. Hirota going low-high with punches. 2-3 from Hirota and another takedown. Miller looks for a leglock from 50/50. One minute in. Hirota defending, waiting it out. Miller uses it to get to top position. Hirota gets to his knees, working to stand. Two minutes in. Hirota counters an attempted back take with the whizzer and takes half guard. Solid punches from Hirota. Two minutes to go.

Hirota threatening an arm-triangle. He abandons it and goes back to the ground-and-pound. Miller tries to roll for a leg, Hirota slips out and drops punches. One minute to go. Miller controlling Hirota’s wrist, eats some more punches. Miller goes for mission control before the bell. 10-9 Hirota.

Round 3: Hirota lands a right hand, avoids one and looks for another takedown. Miller defends, pressed against the fence, and separates. 3-2 from Hirota, then a right to the body. Good combination punching from “Pugnus.” Miller fires a knee and Hirota uses it to score another takedown. Half guard for Hirota. One minute in. Short ground-and-pound. Two minutes in. Miller tying him up, but not offering up much resistance. Two minutes to go.

Miller regains guard. Hirota stands over him and drops some heavy punches. One minute to go. Half guard. Still not much from Miller as Hirota grinds and chips away. Miller makes one more bid for a leg, Hirota just drops punches until the bell. 10-9 Hirota.

170 lbs.: Bryan Barberena vs. Colby Covington

Round 1: Covington flicks out a head kick to start. Tornado kick attempt. Lots of kicks from the wrestler, who shoots in. Covington looking for the single-leg, gets him down. One minute in. Barberena using the cage to stand, makes it up. Covington stays attached and drags him to a knee. Covington staying heavy on the fence, landing knees to the thigh. Another takedown for Covington into side control. Two minutes in. Barberena works his way back up, back to a knee. And back up. Covington with a solid elbow and he hits another takedown when Barberena separates. Two minutes to go.

Barberena back up again, turns to face his foe. They separate. Covington lands a counter 2-3. Well-timed shot and he moves to the bodylock. Barberena looking for a guillotine, gets out of the clinch. Good jab and straight left by Covington. Uppercut and right hook and another hook. 10-9 Covington.

Round 2: Low-high kicks from Covington. Low kick by Barberena, who eatsa 1-2. Covington hits yet another takedown and gets Barberena to his back. Barberena works his way to his knee and stands. One minute in. Covington continues to pressure, Barberena separates. counters from Covington as Barberena presses forward. Good left around the guard from Barberena, right hook catches him. Covington’s striking looks terrific this fight and he hits another takedown. Two minutes to go.

Covington has one hook in, forcing Barberena to carry his weight. Barberena makes it to his feet and separates. Another takedown from Covington. One minute to go. Barberena works his way up and separates. They trade punches. 2-3 from Covington and he shoots in again. Barberena fights it off, eats another right hook. 10-9 Covington.

Round 3: Covington still pressing forwards, hits yet another takedown. Barberena makes it up and Covington grabs the bodylock. Barberena turns to face him. One minute in. They separate. Straight left from Barberena, combo from Covington and another takedown against the cage. Two minutes in. Covingon grinding against the cage. They separate. Jab from Barberena. Jabs from Covington and a 1-2. 1-2-3. Barberena looking to goad him on. Two minutes to go.

Covington ducks an overhand left and hauls Barberena to the fence. Barberena avoids it and they separate. Covington continues to land his jab. Good combination. Barberena’s landing, but not nearly enough. Lefts from Barberena. One minute to go. Covington to the body, eats a kick, lands a left upstairs. Blast double from Covington and he pulls Barberena off the fence on the way down to set up in guard. Barberena goes for a last-ditch guillotine at the bell. 10-9 Covington.

155 lbs.: James Moontasri vs. Alex Morono

Round 1: Morono sending out kicks early, eats a hard one to the body. Good low kicks from Morono. One minute in. Leg kick exchange. Moontasri tries to go high, eats another low kick. He threatens to spin. Wheel kick attempt from Morono, low kick by Moontasri. Quick punching exchange. Morono goes for a superman punch, eats a heavy counter left and a pair of body kicks. Spinning kick from Moontasri. Two minutes to go.

Moontasri catches a body kick and lands one of his own. Wide punches from “The Great White.” Moontasri catches another kick and shakes his head. Low kicks land. Counter left. Good leg kick by Morono. 10-9 Moontasri.

Round 2: Morono whiffs on a head kick, eats a body kick. Morono wings haymakers, lands one. One minute in. Low kick from Morono. Moontasri tries a pair of head kicks. Again, a couple good punches. Right forearm catches Moontasri and sends him stumbling. Moontasri knocks him over with a spinning back kick and knee before the bell. 10-8 Morono.

Final result: Morono def. Moontasri by unanimous decision

155 lbs.: Josh Emmett vs. Scott Holtzman

Round 1: Holtzman aggressive early, blocks a head kick. Glancing left hook from Hot Sauce. Good counter left. Emmett catches a body kick and shoots in. Holtzman defends well, knees the body, eats a right. One minute in and they separate. Nice cross counter by Holtzman and a low kick hits groin. They resume and Holtzman takes a finger in the eye. Emmett shoots for a takedown on the restart and chains it well, getting Holtzman down briefly. He tries a flying knee ont he break and another takedown afterwards. Holtzman gets the Thai plum, firing knees as Emmett tries to work the body. Good knees by Holtzman as Emmett drives forward. Two minutes to go.

Big lift and slam by Emmett. Holtzman quickly pops back up and prevents his back from being taken. Holtzman pressing forward with good combinations and he hits an inside trip into guard. One minute to go. Solid ground-and-pound from Holtzman, good left hands. He drops a big right hand and Emmett uses it to scramble up. More good knees from Holtzman. 10-9 Holtzman.

Round 2: Holtzman blitzes, neither man connects. Emmett catches a head kick and flips Holtzman to the mat, grabbing the rear waistlock as Holtzman stands. Knees from Emmiett, Holtzman reverses with a nice elbow. Holtzman tries to spin on the break, slips, and eats a series of brutal punches from Emmett. One minute in. Emmett changes levels and scores another takedown, getting a hook in this time as Holtzman stands. He makes it up. Holtzman hits a nice trip after reversing position, can’t keep him down. Elbow from Hot Sauce. Emmett’s fading, digs a right to the body anyway. Holtzman scores a takedown into guard, Emmett turns for a heel hook, scrambles up, and hits a takedown, looking for the back. Two minutes to go.

Holtzman slips out the back door and grabs the bodylock. Fence grab by Emmett. He manages to turn and face Holtzman. Knees by Holtzman. One minute to go. They separate and throw hands. Emmett lands a good jumping knee to the body at the bell. 10-9 Emmett, barely.

Round 3: Emmett still managing to move. He goes low-high with punches, eats a right hand. Emmett catches a body kick and takes him to the fence. They trade dirty boxing, nice right hand by Emmett. One minute in. Right cross lands for Holtzman, who gets dropped by a counter right. He’s still posturing but Emmett does some damage. Right hands, body shots, takedown from Emmett. Holtzman pops back up and they go back to trading. Two minutes in. Holtzman shoots, Emmett grabs the fence and manages to pop up two minutes in. He scores a takedown, Holtzman pops back up.Emmett still has the rear waistlock. Two minutes to go.

Browne elbows from Holtzman as he defends. Hard left hand as Emmett lands a body shot. Holtzman tries to jump in with a knee. Single-leg from Emmett on the fence, one minute to go. They separate. Back to trading punches. Body kick by Emmett. He catches another body kick and lands a right hand before scoring a brief takedown. They swing until the bell. Another great fight. 10-9 Emmett.

135 lbs.: Irene Aldana vs. Leslie Smith

Round 1: Aldana pops her with a jab early. Smith connects with a right. They trade right hands. Smith marching forward as Aldana circles, winging punches. Quick exchange. Head kick from Smith, wading in with a flurry. One minute in. Counter right from Aldana. Head kick by Smith. Both land right hands. Two minutes in. Hard right hand and down goes Aldana. She seems to go out, but manages to scramble back to her feet and land a right hand in return. Amith still advancing with punches. Elbow form Smith, uppercut by Aldana. More combinations from Smith. Two minutes to go.

Smith pressing forward, eats a body shot. Both woman landing. Spinning elbow by Smith. Gooe leg kick from Smith. Left hook by Aldana. One minute to go. Right hand and double jab from Aldana, met by a right hand. Left hook connects. Smith with a body kick and right hand. They trade hard punches before the bell. 10-9 Smith.

Round 2: They go right back to exchanging. Inside low kicks by Smith and a right hand upstairs. 1-2-1 lands for Aldana, 2-3 comes back. One minute in. Lead hook connects for Aldana. Spinning elbow from the Mexican prospect. Smith wades into the clinch with a flurry, landing against the fence. Two minutes in. Body kick by Aldana. Smith presses her against the cage and they trade, a solid body shot from Smith the most significant. Two minutes to go.

Flurries from Smith, counter right by Aldana. Hard left hooks by Smith. Nasty combination from Aldana in return. Right hand stings Smith and now Aldana is slugging with her. One minute to go. Round 3: Right back to the firefight, the speed of Aldana’s combinations against Smith’s steady pressure. Aldana still circling, eats body shots. Right hand from Aldana, spinning back kick by Smith. One minute in. Another sneaky hook from Aldana, Smith comes back with an overhand right and a flurry. 1-2 from Aldana and a left hook. Smith relentlessly opens up on the fence, shrugging off counters to land more punches. Leg kick lands for her. 1-2 by Aldana. Left hand exchange. Left hook and uppercut by Aldana, left hook by Smith in return. Two minutes to go.

Smith wades in, lands an elbow, eats right hands. Aldana firing her jab, eats a hard combination upstairs and comes back with a left. Head kick by Aldana. 1-2 lands as smith continues her flurries. Aldana scores a takedown in the last twenty seconds. Great fight. 10-9 Smith.

135 lbs.: Takeya Mizugaki vs. Eddie Wineland

Round 1: Wineland moving, eats a left hook. Mizugaki lands a low kick. 1-2 by the Japanese veteran. Inside low kick. One minute in. Cross counter from Mizugaki, low kick. Wineland has yet to land the right hand. 1-2 connects again for Mizugaki. Jab exchange. Two minutes in. Uppercut by Wineland, right cross by Mizugaki. Nice pair of rights by Wineland and a third drops Mizugaki hard. Mizugaki stumbles to his feet and gets thumped again. The referee rushes in as Mizugaki tries to grapple.

Final result: Wineland def. Mizugaki by TKO (punches)

125 lbs.: Hector Sandoval vs. Fredy Serrano

Round 1: Sandoval moving quite a bit, circling the flat-footed Serrano. Neither man has landed in the first minute. Sandoval ties up and slams Serrano down, landing some swarming blows on the way up. Sandoval walks into a pair of knees, pressing the action. Another knee from Serrano and Sandoval shoots in on the fence. Short knees from Sandoval. Serrano trips him up and just misses a head kick as Sandoval stands. Two minutes in Teep from Serrano, who gets rattle by a counter right hand. They briefly tie up. Lots of feints from Sandoval, who lands another right and shoots. Two minutes to go.

Serrano stays standing and they separate. Wheel kick attempt from Serrano. Axe kick just misses. Front kick and left hook whiff. One minute to go. Sandoval continues to press forward, eats a low kick. Nice counter right. Another low kick by the Colombian. He shots and gets double underhooks, but can’t complete the takedown. Left hook by Sandoval on the break, dodging a jumping knee. Both try knees at the bell.

Round 2: Low kick from Serrano and Sandoval dings him with a counter right. He looks to swarm, shrugging off a flying knee, and locks up a guillotine against the fence. Two minutes in. More leg kicks and a Superman punch from the Serb. Body kick lands, more leg kicks. Aliev still doing nothing. Now he shoots in and takes Velickovic down on the fence. Velickovic turns for an armbar and Aliev stacks him until his grip breaks. Short punches by Aliev. One minute to go. Sharp elbow, Velickovic tries to work from his back in return. Velickovic works his way up, eating punches all the way, and Aliev ties back up. 10-9 Aliev.

Round 2: Aliev falls short with a right hand, eats a body kick and a leg kick. Good straight left from Velickovic. One minute in. Another body kick lands and Aliev counters with a right hand into the clinch, using double underhooks to score an inside trip into guard. Two minutes in. Velickovic whacking away off his back, eats a couple of solid punches from the Dagestani. Velickovic brings his legs up for a triangle, then tries to scramble up. Aliev puts in a hook, leading to near-back mount on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Velickovic grabs the fence to stand. Aliev drives in for another takedown and Velickovic pulls guard for a guillotine. Aliev patiently works his head free and sets up in guard. One minute to go. Occasional ground-and-pound by Aliev as Velockovic keeps looking to bring his legs up. Triangle attempt before the bell. 10-9 Aliev.

Round 3: Low kick from Velickovic to start the round. Head kick attempt. Velickovic shoots and presses Aliev against the cage. Aliev grabs double underhooks and reverses position. Back to over-unders. One minute in. Velickovic avoids an elbow on the way out. Aliev goes for a double-leg and Velickovic counters to take the back. Aliev slips out the back door and takes half guard, avoiding a Kimura in the process. Two minutes in. Aliev briefly gets side control off a failed triangle, back to half guard. He’s not really posturing up, just staying tight and landing short shots. Two minutes to go.

Aliv still chipping away. Not as much striking off the back from Velickovic as before. One minute to go. Velickovic looking for a Kimura. Aliev slips out of a triangle and takes side control. Fight ends there. 10-9 Aliev.
