Chael Sonnen crashed The MMA Hour program earlier today to drop a bit of interesting news, announcing former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Jon Jones would headline his second "Submission Underground" event on Dec. 11, 2016 against none other than recently-retired Dan Henderson in an eight-minute grappling match.
Also, former women’s bantamweight titleholder Miesha Tate will co-headline the show against Jessica Eye.
"The American Gangster" sheds some light:
"I’m working with the guys over at Flo (Combat), we’ve got Submission Underground going down December 11, it is live at FloCombat.com. Co-main event, Jessica Eye will be taking on Miesha Tate and in the main event, UFC 151, Dan Henderson will be taking on Jon Jones. It’s an eight-minute grappling match with Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) rules."
The event is set to go down in the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon.
Of course, news broke earlier today that "Bones" had been suspended by United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for one year after failing a pre-fight drug test prior to his UFC 200 title fight against Daniel Cormier.
According to Sonnen, he was not aware of that news prior to making his announcement. And though Jones isn’t allowed to compete in MMA due to his suspension -- which is scheduled to be up in July of 2017 — he doesn’t believe the punishment will prevent him from competing at his event since the match does not involve actual striking.
That means the event isn’t bound to the regulations of a host state’s athletic commission.
Of course, Jones and Henderson were booked to thrown down at UFC 151 back in 2012, but after "Hendo" suffered a knee injury, the card was scratched altogether after "Bones" refused to fight Sonnen on short notice. Now, fight fans will finally be able to see these two stars go at it, albeit in limited capacity.
As for Eye vs. Tate, it will be the second time these two ladies meet in a combat sports event, as "Cupcake" took down "Evil" at UFC on FOX 16 back in 2015 via unanimous decision.
The event will be available for viewing at FloGrappling.com for a low price of $19.95.
