Third time’s a charm?
After two failed attempts to mount an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) comeback, former Lightweight and Welterweight champion, B.J. Penn, will look to make his return to the Octagon on Jan. 15, 2017, as he has been pegged to take on Yair Rodriguez in the main event of the upcoming UFC Fight Night 103 event at The Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.
UFC confirmed the matchup earlier today.
Penn was scheduled to fight Dennis Siver, then Cole Miller, at UFC 197 this past April, but "The Prodigy" was suspended six months by United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for an out-of-competition IV use.
He was then booked to tango against Ricardo Lamas at the UFC Fight Night 97 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on Oct. 15, 2016 inside SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines, before an injury forced "The Prodigy" out of the contest.
The event was eventually cancelled.
Yair Rodriguez, meanwhile, has been doing plenty of fighting, winning five straight inside the Octagon, including his previous win over Alex Caceres last August. Winner of The Ultimate Fighter: "Latin America" back in 2014, Yair has only tasted defeat once in his combat sports career, sporting an impressive 8-1 record and is widely-considered one of the best prospects in the Featherweight division.
As for Penn, he hasn’t competed inside the Octagon since 2014, losing to Frankie Edgar via strikes in what was his third straight loss.
