Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight No. 1 contender, Thiago Alves, missed weight for his lightweight debut against Jim Miller at the upcoming UFC 205 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which is scheduled for tomorrow night (Nov. 12, 2016) inside Madison Square Garden in New York City.
So much for this.
Alves (21-10) tipped the scale at 162.6 pounds for their UFC Fight Pass showdown, making him roughly six pounds over the division limit of 156. That’s going to cost him 20 percent of his purse (payable to Miller). Unfortunately, this is not the first time the 33-year-old “Pitbull” failed to make his mark.
At least it wasn’t as bad as the Kelvin Gastelum debacle, which ended with the cancelation of his PPV main card showdown against Donald Cerrone.
More on that mess here.
Interestingly enough, New York State Athletic Commission will not allow a fight to continue if there is more than a five-pound discrepancy in weight; meaning Jim Miller had to actually gain weight to save the contest, coming in at 157.6.
New York, New York!
