No settlement reached in Jon Jones’ USADA arbitration hearing, attorney ‘happy’ with marathon meeting

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight titleholder, Jon Jones, appeared before a special arbitration panel yesterday (Oct. 31, 2016) in Los Angeles, Calif., in an attempt to reach a settlement with United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) in the wake of last summer’s failed drug test. More on the genesis of that incident here.

It was a marathon meeting that reportedly lasted a full day, with “Bones” and UFC sharing the cost of three arbitrators who earn about $325 per hour ... each.

In the end, a settlement between Jones and USADA was not reached. However, the arbitrators will reach a consensus on the best way to resolve the case ahead of Jones’ hearing with Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) next month (Nov. 10, 2016). Even if the arbitration recommendation / ruling is favorable toward Jones, sometimes even the simplest disciplinary hearing can run amok when dealing with miserly dunderheads. Jones is facing a potential maximum two-year ban from the sport if NSAC decides to throw the book at him.

Based on Jones’ history with NSAC, this one’s a coin toss.

However, Jones’ attorney, Howard Jacobs, was “happy” with how the facts of the case were presented, telling MMAFighting.com, “We think that before Nevada hears the case, it would be useful for them to see how these arbitrators analyzed the same facts and [came] to the decision that they're going come to.”

Jones — who maintained his innocence since day one — was unable to fight Daniel Cormier at UFC 200 as a result of the drug test, but is now expected to meet either “DC” or Anthony Johnson in his return bout, depending on who proves victorious in the UFC 206 pay-per-view (PPV) main event this December in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

We think.
