There's a pretty good chance regional mixed martial arts (MMA) rookie Mickey Gall is going to win the Phil Brooks lottery and become the fighter selected to welcome "CM Punk" to combat sports.
That's according to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White, who will book the New Jersey native for Punk's debut with a win over Mike Jackson at UFC 196 (more on that stipulation here).
Just don't expect to make any money if you plan to bet against the former WWE champ when he takes to the Octagon later this year. Not only will that decision leave you penniless, it could also leave you single, since your wife will be rooting for Punk.
"I expect people to be disappointed. I expect all those people that think I'm gonna get knocked out in 10 seconds to be disappointed. I expect people to bet against me and lose their money. I expect people to get divorced because they're upset that their wife wanted me to win and they wanted me to lose, you know? But the people who have stood by me and supported me know it's business as usual. They know what kind of person I am and they know how I am at the gym. And once that cage door shuts it's between one minute and 15 minutes before the fight ends and my hand gets raised."
Just for the record, my wife is not rooting for CM Punk, but she'll probably divorce me anyway (once she sees this).
Punk ditched pro wrestling back in 2014 and promptly announced his allegiance to MMA. Unfortunately, the delay in getting him into the cage for an actual fight has left some fans, like this UFC champ, wondering if the transition has lost some of its luster.
Time will tell.
