No. 7-ranked women's Strawweight, Paige VanZant, looked to make it three consecutive wins inside the Octagon at UFC 191 tonight (Sat., Sept. 2015) and continue her ascent up the 115-pound contender ladder.
Alex Chambers, however, was out to derail the "12-Gauge" hype train inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Didn't happen, not even close.
VanZant got the action started with immediate pressure, but Chambers drilled her with a nice combination as she circled away. VanZant pinned her up against the cage and attempted to work a Muay Thai clinch and Chambers responded with some nice dirty boxing. Chambers mouth was agape just two minutes into the match, perhaps ill-prepared for the torrid pace that VanZant was setting.
Chambers attempted a takedown along the fence, but VanZant defended it easily and then dumped the Aussie several moments later. Back on their feet, VanZant went back to pinning Chambers against the fence and controlling the action. Chambers looked to escape by diving for a leg lock, but VanZant easily stepped out and landed some nice shots before the bell.
VanZant came out for the second round much like first and soon enough threw her back into the cage and began softening up Chambers' mid-section. Chambers began to buckle under the pressure, offering little resistance, her power all but a distant memory.
Chambers struggled along the cage to block VanZant's knees, which were relentless. VanZant landed several shots along the cage to her face and Chambers fell to the canvas. She was able to get back to her feet, but VanZant dragged her down again quickly and boxed her ears until the round came to a close -- Chambers was in bad shape heading back to her corner.
It was pretty clear that Chambers had nothing left in her gas tank and VanZant wasted little time bringing the fight to her once again. VanZant got her crumpled along the cage, maneuvered to her back and sunk in a rear-naked choke. Chambers had no choice but to give up her back, which lead to vicious ground-and-pound. As Chambers was covering up, VanZant grabbed her forearm, ripped it back and forced her to furiously tap to an impressive armbar.
Clinical.
