Demetrious Johnson's greatest challenger is back for another go.
This Saturday (Sept. 5, 2015) at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 14 winner and knockout fiend John Dodson makes another bid for Flyweight supremacy against "Mighty Mouse," who will look to secure his seventh straight 125-pound title defense.
Meanwhile, in UFC 191's co-main event, former Heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Frank Mir will duke it out in a slugfest straight out of 2006. In addition, recent Light Heavyweight challenger Anthony Johnson will be in action as well, facing English knockout artist Jimi Manuwa.
I can't think of any pithy introductions, so let's just jump right into it. Here are the odds behind UFC 191:
UFC 191 Odds For The Undercard:
Paul Felder (-400) vs. Ross Pearson (+325)
John Lineker (-115) vs. Francisco Rivera (-105)
Jessica Andrade (-210) vs. Raquel Pennington (+175)
Clay Collard (-135) vs. Tiago dos Santos (+115)
Ron Stallings (-160) vs. Joe Riggs (+140)
Nazareno Malegarie (-130) vs. Joaquim Silva (+110)
Thoughts: Not gonna lie -- this card is short on bargains. All of the lines are, unfortunately, for the prospective bettor, very reasonable. The one line that stands out to me is Tiago "Trator" dos Santos as an underdog.
Frankly, I just haven’t been impressed with Collard. He’s got variety, cardio and aggression for days, but doesn’t seem adept at chaining his attacks together into a cohesive whole. His whole strategy can be boiled down to "hit them a bunch." The Brazilian, by contrast, has a mauling clinch game that could work wonders against someone as reliant on cardio as Collard is. I also think he’s got the edge in physicality, so expect dos Santos to steadily bulldoze his way to a decision win.
UFC 191 Odds For The Main Card:
Demetrious Johnson (-500) vs. John Dodson (+400)
Andrei Arlovski (-155) vs. Frank Mir (+135)
Anthony Johnson (-550) vs. Jimi Manuwa (+425)
Jan Blachowicz (-150) vs. Corey Anderson (+130)
Paige VanZant (-1300) vs. Alex Chambers (+850)
Thoughts: For several fights in a row, I have been burned by picking against Mir. I am going to do it again because I am not a quitter.
The single biggest reason for Arlovski’s resurgence is his confidence. Jack Slack has some solid breakdowns to explain more, but it boils down to the fact that "Pitbull" isn’t built to sit back and jab. Arlovski is built to throw nuclear right hands at your face until you fall over. He’s still vulnerable, but he’s such a threat on the front foot that return fire becomes less of a concern. While he has a worrying tendency to keep his left hand low, Mir’s right hand isn’t anywhere near the threat his left is.
"The Pitbull" blows him out in one.
You can get nearly even odds by parlaying Johnson with him, and I say go for it. Dodson still hasn’t fixed some of his lingering issues (like his reliance on speed to close the distance) and the massive success Johnson enjoyed in the clinch gives him a solid blueprint for the rematch.
UFC 191 Best Bets:
- Single bet -- Tiago dos Santos: Bet $50 to make $57.50
- Parlay -- Demetrious Johnson and Andrei Arlovski: Bet $60 to make $58.25
Numerous finishers and plenty of potential for fireworks -- UFC 191 sounds like a recipe for a quality pay-per-view (PPV).
See you there, Maniacs!
