No. 8-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight, Takeya Mizugaki, returned to the win column in his home country.
Mizugaki defeated George Roop via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 75 earlier tonight (Sat., Sept. 26, 2015) inside Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.
All three judges scored it 30-27.
The native Japanese fighter had the edge in the opening frame, landing solid punches to both the body and head of Roop. The Amercian was unable to utilize his reach advantage, allowing Mizugaki inside throughout the opening five minutes.
In the second Mizugaki started off by landing a big combination, but couldn't capitalize. Roop continued to press forward and clinch up with Mizugaki, but the No. 8-ranked UFC bantamweight broke free and continued to get the better of Roop in the striking department and consistently found a home for his right hand.
In the final frame, Roop continued to try what didn't work for him in the first two rounds, attempting to clinch with Mizugaki. He came close to taking down him down, but the hometown fighter showed excellent takedown defense. Mizugkai landed a one-two and briefly went for a takedown of his own, but then thought better of it. The fight returned to the clinch before coming to its conclusion.
Not a super impressive victory for Mizugaki, but an important one as he needed to get back into the win column to stay relevant in the bantamweight division.
With the victory, Mizugaki snaps his two-fight losing streak and improves to 21-9-2. Roop drops his second fight in a row and falls to 15-12-1.
