Jared Rosholt earned a unanimous decision victory over Timothy Johnson at UFC Fight 73 earlier tonight, but he nearly lost it all in the final minute of the fight after getting clipped with a big punch.
"Big Show" controlled the first two rounds with takedowns and wrestling to earn a 29-28 score from all three judges inside Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
After a brief feeling-out process, Rosholt clinched up with Johnson and pushed him into the fence. Johnson reversed position, then lost it, but got it back and landed a takedown. Rosholt immediately popped back up to his feet, but found himself pressed up against the cage once again.
Referee Herb Dean restarted the action after lull in the action against the cage.
Rosholt landed a takedown when the action continued and advanced into side control. He was not able to capitalize on his position and did not land any significant strikes as Johnson was able to avoid any trouble.
The fight took place along the fence once again in the second with both fighters struggling to gain control of the fight. With about two minutes left in the round Johnson secured a body lock and landed a trip on Rosholt, but lost position on the ground. Rosholt postured up in the half guard of Johnson and landed a few solid elbows on the North Dakoka-based fighter. Rosholt attacked Johnson's right arm and flirted with an Americana submission right before the round ended.
Johnson came out more aggressive in the final frame, but Rosholt controlled the fight with his wrestling like he did in the first two rounds, landing an early takedown after Johnson attempted a standing guillotine.
With about one minute left, Johnson had a late surge and connected with a big right hand that had Rosholt badly hurt. He moved forward winging big punches to follow up, but inexplicably took Rosholt down instead of continuing to hunt for the knockout, letting him off the hook.
Rosholt improves to 13-2 with the victory and has won two fights in row. Johnson falls to 9-2.
