The next generation of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Flyweight division kicked off the main card at UFC Fight Night 73 earlier tonight (Sat. August 8, 2015) as the No.14-ranked Ray Borg took on promotion newcome Geane Herrera.
Borg defeated Herrera by unanimous decision inside Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., by landing well-timed takedowns and using superior grappling over the course of three rounds. All three judges scored it 30-27 for Borg.
Borg shot in and landed a beautiful double-leg takedown to start the first round. Herrera did an excellent job of not allowing Borg to pass his guard. Borg then threatened with a guillotine attempt and tried to roll over into mount. Herrera survived and attacked with a heel hook. Borg countered with an inverted heel hook to counter "La Pulga's" attack.
"The TazMexican Devil" briefly flirted with a kimura, but Herrera's defense did not allow it. Borg was finally able to pass Herrera's guard and threatened with a side choke--where he moved into mount for a few seconds. Herrera escaped the submission attempt and recovered guard right before the round's conclusion.
In the second, Borg landed another takedown to start off the round. The No.14-ranked UFC flyweight locked up a mounted guillotine, but Herrera did not succumb to the choke and managed to escape it. Borg would keep Herrera on the defensive and continue with top pressure and multiple attempts to pass his guard and flirted with locking up a side-triangle choke on more than one occasion. Herrera threw up a couple of unsuccessful triangle attempts and avoided getting hit with any significant strikes.
It was rinse and repeat in the third frame as Borg locked up another double-leg takedown. Herrera landed a short elbow from his guard and blood began to pour out of Borg's head. Referee Mario Yamasaki would stop the fight and have a doctor come in to take a look at the cut.
The action continued and Borg attacked with another guillotine while his head continued to drip blood on the canvas of the Octagon. Borg continued with pressure from the top and attempts at passing Herrera's guard. Herrera was able to sweep and nearly landed into mount. Herrera tried for a guillotine, but Borg countered and landed yet another takedown. The pattern of the fight continued with Borg looking to pass and lock up a guillotine. The fight ended with Borg taking Herrera's back in the closing seconds.
With the victory, Borg improves to 9-1 and is now 3-1 in the UFC. Herrera suffers his first career defeat in his UFC debut and is now 8-1.
