Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Strawweight women Paige VanZant and Alex Chamber will clash this Saturday (Sept. 5, 2015) at UFC 191 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
One of the division's brightest prospects, VanZant overcame a big test in her last bout. If the 21-year-old can extend her win streak, she's in a great position to move into the division's elite.
Meanwhile, Chambers is still looking for consistency. She came up short in her Octagon debut, but a come from behind armbar victory in her last bout kept her UFC career alive.
Let's take a look at the keys to victory for both women:
Paige VanZant
Record: 5-1
Key Wins: Felice Herrig (UFC on FOX 15), Kailan Curran (UFC Fight Night 57)
Key Losses: Teccia Torres (Invicta FC 4)
Keys to Victory: VanZant is a very talented athlete, known for her toughness and extremely high pace. As she's proven in consecutive UFC bouts, "12 Gauge" will wear her opponent down with constant strikes en route to a finish.
In this bout, that's a very viable path to victory. Chambers is tough, but she's not the technically superior fighter in any area. Plus, she doesn't appear to have the athleticism to compete with VanZant.
Really, the Team Alpha Male-trained fighter simply needs to avoid making any critical mistakes. Her opponent is a crafty submission fighter, so VanZant cannot afford to have her back taken or fall into an armbar.
Outside of that, VanZant should be able to impose her will.
To really make a statement and prove she deserves a top five opponent, VanZant needs to finish her opponent. Luckily, this is the perfect opponent for her to really unleash her offense upon, particularly on the feet. Chambers is not very effective with her strikes, so VanZant doesn't need to be all that concerned with counter strikes.
VS.
Alex Chambers
Record: 5-2
Key Wins: Kailan Curran (UFC Fight Night 65), Jodie Esquibel (Invicta FC 5)
Key Losses: Aisling Daly (The Ultimate Fighter 20 Finale)
Keys to Victory: Chambers is a dangerous submission fighter. Though she's not the youngest or most explosive fighter on the roster, Chambers is definitely a gutsy and tough fighter.
This is a very difficult match up for "Astro Girl." She doesn't have any real advantages on paper, except for perhaps straight Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Unfortunately, VanZant has proven to have a solid top game, smothering her opponent's attempts to snatch a limb or reverse position.
There's a reason Chambers currently sits as a 16-1 underdog ... and it's not all hype.
When a fighter is deservedly such a large underdog, it's up to her to make something big happen. If she goes out there and fights without taking risks, the chance of Chambers pulling out a victory is extremely slim.
To give herself the best chance at victory, Chambers need to go all out in finding the submission. She's not going to find much success on her feet, so Chambers should dive in for takedowns or look for high-risk throws whenever possible.
Simply put, Chambers really needs this fight to hit the mat.
From top or bottom, Chambers needs to be as active as possible with her submission attempts. Not only is that her best chance of finding the victory, but it will prevent VanZant from opening up with her ground strikes.
Bottom Line: This is a rather important bout for both women and will determine who rises into the title mix.
Just six fights into her professional career, VanZant is already among the division's biggest stars. Win or lose, VanZant has proven herself to be quite marketable, but her star will only grow brighter with victories. She's been set up to do well here, and it's important that "12 Gauge" lives up to the hype.
Otherwise, the 21-year-old fighter could lose her position in the top ten.
If VanZant wins -- like the betting odds predict -- she's another step closer to the top. A win over "Astro Girl" won't earn her a title shot, but it could potentially land her in a title eliminator.
As the massive underdog, this is nothing but a huge opportunity for Chambers. If she takes out VanZant, she's defeated two of the division's best young prospects in a row. In a relatively thin division, that could be enough to become a title contender.
Alternatively, a loss here doesn't really hurt Chambers' position. She's not seen as a contender, so she doesn't have all that much to lose here.
At UFC 191, Paige VanZant and Alex Chambers will open the main card in a Strawweight scrap. Which woman will have her hand raised?
