Highlights: Watch Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares go to war in Los Angeles

What...a...scrap!

Last night (Sat. Aug. 29, 2015), two talented Featherweight boxing standouts slugged it out, as Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares went toe-to-toe for the vacant WBA title in the latest installment of Al Haymon's "Premier Boxing Champions" series.

And if undefeated (30-0-1, 17 KO) standout Santa Cruz thought holding on to his unbeaten record was going to be easy, he was in for a rude awakening. From the get-go, Mares made it known that he would pressure Leo and would not back down one bit.

And he did just that, as Mares brought the action early and often.

But Santa Cruz was game, as he fired back with an unbelievable volume of punches -- for which he is known for -- as Mares tried to match him strike-for-strike.

As you can see in the highlights above (via ESPN), for twelve rounds, the two talented pugilists put on a show for the thousands packed into the Staples Center, who could rarely find time to sit down thanks to one exciting round after another, including the epic eighth and twelfth rounds.

When it was all said and done, Santa Cruz threw 1,057 punches while Mares wasn't far behind with 980. That's 2,037 punches combined!

Got cardio?

Leo would go on to win a majority decision, but it didn't come easy, as Mares proved he had the heart and skill to go toe-to-toe with one of the sports best.
