Two recent investigations into allegations of verbal and physical abuse stemming from situations involving Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) combatants Anthony Johnson and Travis Browne concluded this week (read about them here and here).
Browne was reinstated this week after being indefinitely sidelined because of accusations of domestic violence by his estranged wife back in July. Johnson, however, was not put on suspension and is still pegged to face British striker Jimi Manuwa on the main card UFC 191 in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sept. 5, 2015 (full fight card here).
The 31-year-old has had to deal with the backlash over the last two weeks in regard to an ugly Facebook rant that referenced a confrontation he had with a female gym member. UFC launched a third-party investigation, which resulted in statement of "disappointment" by his employer, with "Rumble" being asked to apologize to said woman.
He was also asked to begin counseling and make a donation to a Florida-based women's charity.
Now, Johnson has opened up about the ordeal (read his previous apology here). His words, as told to UFC.com:
"They did an investigation, but I knew from the start I didn’t attack anybody, I didn’t do anything (except post) some stupid stuff on Facebook, and that was it. I’m human. Every day can’t be perfect. I’ve never said I was an angel, and I’ll never be an angel. I am myself. I don’t feel like I have anything to prove. As long as my friends and family know who I am and they support me and love me, I sleep very well at night."
This wasn't the first time Johnson was involved in an alleged incident of abuse of a woman. In Sept. 2014, he was indefinitely suspended following a 2012 report, which accused the No. 1-ranked Light Heavyweight of striking the mother of his children and this March 2014 domestic disturbance involving a different woman.
Johnson was inevitably cleared of any wrong-doing after the most recent civil case was dismissed in Nov. 2014. He was also arrested on charges of domestic violence and two misdemeanor charges in 2009, to which he pleaded no-contest.
Right now, the Blackzilians stud is completely focused on getting back in the win column against "Poster Boy" after coming up short in his UFC 187 title fight with Daniel Cormier this past Memorial Day weekend. Johnson was taken down and submitted in the third round of their scrap inside MGM Grand Garden Arena.
"On every takedown, I knew the mistake I made as soon as he took me down. He’s [Manuwa] a beast. He has great power and good stand-up. He’s not afraid to stand there and bang. To me, that’s what makes this fight so entertaining, because everybody knows I’m going to try and knock your head off and he’s trying to do the same thing. We’re just guns blazing."
The 35-year-old Manuwa is 4-1 in five Octagon appearances and 15-1 overall. Three of his four victories have come by way of knockout; except his most recent one, which was a unanimous-decision win over Jan Blachowicz back in April.
He's currently the No. 7-ranked 205-pound contender in UFC's latest rankings. Johnson possesses an overall mixed martial arts (MMA) record of 19-5 and 9-5 UFC.
