Patrick Cote finished Josh Burkman in the third round of their highly-entertaining Welterweight battle at UFC Fight Night 74 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, earlier tonight (Sun., Aug. 23, 2015)
"The Predator" dropped Burkman with a right hand before finishing him off with strikes on the ground inside SaskTel Centre, handing Burkman the first technical knockout of his career.
The official time came at 1:26 of round three.
The 170-pound contest between the two 35-year-old veterans began with Burkman throwing side kicks at Cote and the Canadian failing on a takedown attempt. "People's Warrior" connected with some big punches and briefly flirted with a guillotine attempt, but could not hold on to it. Cote grabbed a single-leg takedown attempt, but Burkman deftly fought it off.
"The Predator" caught Burkman with a huge right hand that rocked him with about 10 seconds left in the round. Burkman smiled at the Canadian, but he was wobbled by the punch.
Cote pressed Burkman into the fence to start the second round and the Canadian crowd began to cheer his name loudly. Burkman landed a well-executed takedown, but Cote would get back to his feet. Cote landed some good strikes and Burkman answered with some of his own. Cote tried another takedown, but Burkam once again fought it off.
Burkman came out aggressive in the final frame and connected with big punches early and had Cote in trouble against the fence, but Cote weathered the storm.
Soon after the momentum would change for good.
Cote landed a huge right hand that sent Burkman to the canvas. From there he would jump on him and rain down hammer fists until referee Jerin Valel waved off the fight.
With the win, Cote improves to 23-9 overall. Burkman falls to 27-11 (1) and has yet to win in his second stint in UFC.
