Olivier Aubin-Mercier dominated Tony Sims to pick up the eighth win of his career at UFC Fight Night 74 earlier tonight (Sun. Aug. 23, 2015) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
The wrestling and takedowns of "Quebec Kid" proved to be too much for Sims over three rounds of action, registering a unanimous decision victory inside SaskTel Centre.
All three judges scored the fight 30-27.
Aubin-Mercier went in on a single-leg takedown to start the fight and completed it along the fence. Sims made it to his feet, only to have the Montreal native pick him up and slam him to the canvas. From there the Tri-star Gym-trained fighter took the back of the American, locked up a body triangle, and began to hunt for a rear-naked choke.
"Quebec Kid" remained in control for the remainder of the round and continued to soften up Sims with punches and hammer fists, but Sims did not succumb to the choke attempt.
The second round started off similar to the first with Aubin-Mercier once again moving in on a single-leg takedown attempt. Sims thwarted the first attempt, but the 7-1 Lightweight succeeded on the second try. Sims remained on the defensive for the rest of the round, getting taken down, and fighting to get back to his feet only to get taken down repeatedly.
His only saving grace was being able to avoid any damage while on the ground.
It was rinse and repeat in the final frame, as Aubin-Mericer immediately went for another takedown as that was working for him in the first two rounds of the fight. This time he would eat a few good hammer fists by SIms as he was fully committed to the single-leg attempt. After returning to his feet, Sims attempted a guillotine choke as Aubin-Mercier took him down again, but it was to no avail.
Aubin-Mercier transitioned to Sims back and once again locked up a body triangle and began to angle for another a rear-naked choke like he did in the first round until the fight's conclusion.
The 26-year-old Canadian improves to 8-1 and has now won three straight fights. Sims had his four-fight win streak snapped in defeat.
