Valerie Letourneau handed Maryna Moroz her first career defeat at UFC Fight Night 74 earlier tonight (Sun., Aug. 23, 2015) in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
"Trouble" proved to be the better boxer over the course of three rounds and also used her ground game to her advantage -- as well as a well-placed takedown -- en route to a unanimous decision inside SaskTel Centre Centre. The three scores were: 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27.
Moroz got the better of the exchanges early on in the opening round, until Letorneau connected on a big right hand, which sat the No. 8-ranked UFC Strawweight on the canvas. From there, "Trouble" controlled the action from side control. Moroz triangled her legs over Letourneau toward the end of the round, but it was not a threat.
Moroz would hold that position until the end of the round.
In the second, the fight would remain standing and Moroz was just as aggressive as she was in the first, but the Canadian proved to be the better boxer. Moroz pressed forward and fired away, but Letorneau landed well-placed counters throughout the round. The Ukrainian landed a good right hand that wobbled Letorneau with about a minute left and tried to jump into an arm bar, but was unsuccessful.
In the final round, Letourneau was able to get the fight to the ground early on after catching a kick from Moroz. From there she set up shop inside the guard of Moroz. She didn't land many significant strikes and when Moroz tried to lock up a triangle, she escaped and the fight returned to the feet for the last half-minute of the fight.
The victory was the third straight in the UFC for the 32-year-old American Top Team (ATT)-trained fighter, who is now 8-3 overall. She should find herself in the Top 10 of the division when the new rankings are released. Moroz suffers her first career defeat and is now 6-1.
