The Featherweight future is coming ...
Two elite, young 145-pound standouts with a flair for dramatic finishes will lock horns in the Great White North this Sunday night (Aug. 23, 2015) when Max Holloway collides with Charles Oliveira in the main event of UFC Fight Night 74, which will take place inside SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
The live FOX Sports 1-televised card will also feature a pair of evenly-matched Welterweight scraps: Neil Magny vs. Erick Silva and Josh Burkman vs. Patrick Cote.
Admittedly, it's been a rough few weeks here at the MMAmania.com Betting Guide, so let's see if we can't turn things around.
Here's the plan:
UFC Fight Night 74 Odds For The Undercard:
Misha Cirkunov (-450) vs. Daniel Jolly (+360)
Felipe Arantes (-205) vs. Yves Jabouin (+173)
Marcos Rogerio de Lima (-145) vs. Nikita Krylov (+125)
Frankie Perez (-135) vs. Sam Stout (+115)
Chris Beal (-165) vs. Chris Kelades (+145)
Elias Silverio (-250) vs. Shane Campbell (+210)
Thoughts: I’m trying to think of a good joke to link Brazil and Canada, but I’m currently drawing a blank, so I’ll just skip the pleasantries and tell you that de Lima and Campbell are worth a look.
Krylov is an entertaining fighter, but he’s just not all that good. His lack of quality wrestling hamstrings his opportunistic grappling and he doesn’t have terribly much technical acumen in the striking. The Brazilian will likely be the bigger man in the cage and by far the more skilled and powerful puncher.
I’d honestly peg "Pezao" as worthy of a -250 line (-145 is an absolute steal).
Campbell isn’t someone to take a mortgage out on, but I haven’t been impressed enough with Silverio’s recent efforts to skip on a +210 line. Campbell will have a three-inch height advantage and superior striking acumen.
Silverio can wrestle if he has to, though, so just put a bit on "Shaolin."
UFC Fight Night 74 Odds For The Main card:
Max Holloway (-220) vs. Charles Oliveira (+180)
Erick Silva (-170) vs. Neil Magny (+150)
Josh Burkman (-135) vs. Patrick Cote (+115)
Chad Laprise (-335) vs. Francisco Trinaldo (+275)
Olivier Aubin-Mercier (-240) vs. Tony Sims (+200)
Maryna Moroz (-180) vs. Valerie Letourneau (+158)
Thoughts: The opening two fights feature underdogs I’m a bit more confident in: Sims and Letourneau.
Aubin-Mercier has potential and his Judo prowess is no joke, but he’s still a work-in-progress on the feet and he’s not an adept wrestler at range. Plus, he showed that he can be hurt against David Michaud. Sims -- in addition to a height advantage and superior boxing -- has the wrestling skill to stay on the feet and the power to end it there.
Profit from the Canadian fans’ crushing disappointment.
Despite Moroz’s stunning upset of Joanne Calderwood, Letourneau is seriously undervalued here. Moroz’s game begins and ends with that killer armbar and Letourneau has her badly outgunned on the feet. "Trouble" took Claudia Gadelha to a split decision and recently outstruck a decorated professional boxer.
Even though she may have a few hairy moments early on, I fully expect her to take over late. Bank on it.
Holloway is also a worthwhile investment. Oliveira’s striking defense remains fair too porous against a lethal volume puncher like "Blessed," especially since "do Bronx" won’t have his customary length advantage. The young Brazilian will wilt under the Hawaiian’s onslaught before too long.
UFC Fight Night 74 Best Bets:
- Parlay -- Marcos Rogerio de Lima and Max Holloway: Bet $60 to make $87.60
- Single bet -- Shane Campbell: Bet $20 to make $42
- Single bet -- Tony Sims: Bet $35 to make $70
- Single bet -- Valerie Letourneau: Bet $40 to make $63.20
You're not going to want to miss the main event ... and the rest ain't to shabby, either.
See you there, Maniacs!
