Daniel Cormier catches injury bug, fight with Alexander Gustafsson 'slightly' delayed

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

An injury to recently-crowned UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Daniel Cormier, will slightly delay his first defense of the title, according to a MMAjunkie.com.

Cormier (16-1) was expected to face lanky Swede Alexander Gustafsson (16-3) at UFC 191 in Sept. 2015, but an undisclosed injury will cause a "slight delay" of that bout by at least one month. The exact nature of the injury isn't immediately known, however, it is thought to be related to a knee problem.

UFC President Dana White first floated the title bout idea last month, surprising many who thought No. 3-ranked Ryan Bader was next in line for the shot. Gustafsson, now ranked No. 2, last appeared in the Octagon at UFC on FOX 14 in January when he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Anthony Johnson.

UFC 191 takes place Sept. 5, 2015, inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, but as of the time of this writing, there is just one bout announced officially between women's Strawweight fighters Paige VanZant and Alex Chambers.
