UFC's Khabib Nurmagomedov's younger brother, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, stateside debut set for WSOF 22

New, comments

A fighter with a familiar last name has been slotted to make his World Series of Fighting (WSOF) debut this weekend live on NBC Sports Network.

World Series of Fighting

If the name Abubakar Nurmagomedov sounds familiar it's with good reason -- he's the younger brother of undefeated Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Does that mean that Abubakar also wrestled a bear growing up?

Either way, the up-and-coming (9-1) Welterweight has been booked opposite a bear of an opponent at WSOF 22: "Palhares vs. Shields" this Saturday night (Aug. 1, 2015) when he tangles with undefeated Jorge Moreno (4-0).

Nurmagomedov would be perfect, too, were it not for the lone blemish on his record in Sept. 2014, when a ringside physician stopped his bout with Magomed Mustafaev at 4:11 of the first round because of a cut suffered in the fight.

Abubakar is also known as a finisher, picking up wins via (technical) knockout in 60 percent of his fights. Moreno, meanwhile, gets the finish in 75 percent of his fights -- two technical knockout wins (including one by doctor's stoppage) and one submission.

Their bout will come underneath a card headlined by Welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares, who will defend his title against top contender Jake Shields, Bantamweight champion Marlon Moraes against Sheymon Moraes, and a Light Heavyweight tilt between Mike Kyle versus Thiago Silva.

WSOF 22 takes place inside Planet Hollywood Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, airing live on NBC Sports Network at 11 p.m. ET.
