Recently-crowned Light Heavyweight titleholder of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Daniel Cormier will face former top contender Alexander Gustafsson in his first title defense at UFC 192, which will take place Oct. 3, 2015, inside Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
The announcement came during the broadcast of UFC Fight Night 72 earlier today (Sat., July 18, 2015).
"DC" snatched the vacant title after Jon Jones' hit-and-run saga over former No. 1 contender Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 in May. Meanwhile, "The Mauler" has been out of action since receiving a taste of his own medicine against "Rumble" at UFC on FOX 14 in Sweden.
The 28-year-old Gustafsson was given the opportunity, only after this guy was overlooked, in controversial fashion being he is coming off of a lopsided loss to Johnson. He intended to get his crack at the belt at UFC 191, but an undisclosed injury forced Cormier out of the planned bout.
Though he would love to get his hands on Bader, Cormier is pleased to award Gustafsson his shot.
"I think Alex is a worthy opponent. He'll be a tough challenge," Cormier said in a statement released during the broadcast. "I'm sure we'll give the Houston fans an exciting and fun fight."
The Swede, who is 1-2 in his last three outings, had his own injury woes at one time. His last win came against Jimi Manuwa in March 2014, though he is as focused on attaining gold as he has ever been.
"It's great to have a date set for this fight and I'm ready for my title shot," said Gustafsson. "I'm very focused and motivated for this fight, but also I'm very grateful for this opportunity. I can't wait -- bring it on."
