In the co-main event at UFC Fight Night 72, Evan Dunham defeated Ross Pearson by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27) in a lightweight affair inside The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, earlier today (Sat. July, 18, 2015).
Dunahm proved to be the superior grappler, utilizing his wrestling and ground game over the course of three rounds to earn the nod from the judges.
The 33-year old veteran landed a takedown early on and took Pearson's back as he looked for a rear-naked choke. Pearson would defend and was able to hand fight successfully. Dunham switched to an armbar as "Real Deal" tried to escape and had him in all kinds of trouble.
Pearson showed his heart, determination, and veteran savvy and refused to tap. He escaped and made his way back to his feet before the round ended.
Dunham went right back to his wrestling to start off the second round and changed levels and scored another takedown. Dunham was able to land a few punches, but Pearson used his legs to push Dunham away and again make it back up to his feet.
Pearson remained on the defensive as Dunham dragged the English veteran back down to the floor and took his back once more. The Robert Drysdale Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had Pearson in trouble again with another body triangle and Pearson was unable to reverse position.
Dunham was unsuccessful with his takedown attempts in the third round, but he still remained in control of the fight because of staying on Pearson, who couldn't mount any significant offense. Dunham would ride out the round by holding Pearson against the fence relentlessly looking for another takedown.
A solid victory for Dunahm, who improves to 16-6 overall. Pearson drops his second straight after a disappointing performance and has now lost two in a row.
