Leon Edwards and Pawel Pawlak squared off in a welterweight contest at UFC Fight Night 72 inside The SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, earlier today (Sat. July 18, 2015).
"Rocky" would earn the unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) after controlling the action for the duration of the 15-minute bout in the clinch and with some well-timed striking.
After a few brief exchanges to start the opening round, Edwards would close in on Pawlak and push him up against the fence in the clinch. Pawlak struggled a bit to reverse position or get his back off the cage, but he was able to tie up Edwards. "Plastinho" was unsuccessful on a takedown and once again found himself with his back up against the cage.
The English native smothered Pawlak once again along the fence, but after neither fighter advanced position, referee Leon Roberts restarted the action in the center of the Octagon.
In the second frame, both fighters were unable to land anything of significance early on. "Rocky" would get the fight back to the clinch, but Pawlak would tie him up and get another restart from the referee.
The Polish welterweight pulled guard to get the fight to the canvas, but Edwards would take advantage from the top and land several strikes until the round's conclusion.
Pawlak would eat a groin shot early on in the third round. And when the action restarted, he digested a head kick from Roberts that landed flush, sending him to the floor. Pawlak recovered nicely, while Edwards tried to close out the fight.
"Rocky" could've stayed on top, but he stood up to get the fight back on the feet. Edwards remained in control and out of the way of several wild swings by "Plastinho," and once again easily controlled Pawlak in the clinch to end the round.
Edwards picked up his second win in UFC and improves to 10-2 overall. A disappointing loss for Pawlak who drops to 11-2 after picking up a "Performance" bonus in his last fight.
