A Lightweight battle between Stevie Ray and Leonardo Mafra kicked off the main card at UFC Fight Night 72 earlier today (Sat. July 18, 2015) in Glasgow, Scotland, with both fighters looking to pick up their second win in one of the most competitive divisions in UFC.
The Fife, Scotland, native would get the victory after finishing Mafra inside The SSE Hydro by technical knockout in the opening round.
After an uneventful opening two minutes, Ray clipped Mafra with a big counter right hook, which sent the Brazilian reeling. From there on out it was only a matter of time until the hometown boy sealed the deal to the delight of the raucous Scotland crowd.
"Braveheart" poured it on and landed a left hand that had "Macarrao" on rubber legs as he fell into the cage. Ray swarmed in immediately and finished the Brazilian off for good on the ground. Referee Marc Goddard called a halt to the action at the 2:30 mark of round 1.
A very impressive win for "Braveheart," who would've made Sir William Wallace proud.
By picking up his second win in UFC, Ray has now won four straight fights and improves to 18-5 overall. Mafra falls to 12-3.
