Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight contender Tony Ferguson, who captured The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 13 crown back in 2011, is now 9-1 under the ZUFFA banner (19-3 overall) with 15 finishes, nine by way of knockout and six via submission.
Yet "El Cucuy" is still not ranked among the division top 10.
That's likely to change after the next rankings update, as Ferguson ran through Josh Thomson at the UFC Fight Night 71 mixed martial arts (MMA) event last Weds. night (July 15, 2015) in San Diego, Calif. (watch it), for what amounted to his sixth straight win.
From his conversation with FOX Sports:
"I feel pretty badass right now. I had an opportunity to go out there and throw much more than punches. I had a great time out there. I'm gonna hit up Joe Silva and we'll talk. Go back to the drawing board tomorrow, go get my eye checked out, get a couple X-rays and make sure I'm cleared, then go back to training and kick some ass. Top 10, here I am baby, you better watch out. Don't sleep on me, I'm 'El Cucuy.'"
Don't sleep, or you might go to sleep.
Ferguson is currently ranked No. 11 at 155 pounds and only moved up one spot because Gilbert Melendez, who failed his UFC 188 drug test, was ruled ineligible following his suspension from combat sports. I think "El Cucuy" will at the very least trade places with the No. 9-ranked Thomson.
As far as his next opponent?
That remains to be seen, but I hear Myles Jury is sitting around with nothing to do.
