Former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir would make the walk to the Octagon for the 25th time of his career at UFC Fight Night 71 and for the first time in a long time, was coming into a fight after a win.
Mir knocked out Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva in February to put a four-fight losing streak in his rearview mirror and against Todd Duffee, he would earn his second KO in as many fights.
In the main event, Mir would crumble Duffee via brutal knockout inside Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Calif., on FOX Sports 1.
Duffee came out hard and heavy, but so did Mir, who is usually a bit of a slow starter. The two threw caution to the wind and began winging wild and crazy punches at one another. Duffee would rock Mir with two big punches and then Mir put his lights out with a huge left hook.
A nasty left hand that face planted Duffee and left him down on the canvas for quite some time after "Big" John McCarthy jumped in to stop it at the 1:13 mark of the first round.
"I went out there and beat a young stud by what he does best, which is throw leather, throw explosive and throw hard," Mir said to Jon Anik after the fight. "I fought a little emotional. I usually don't do that. I try to be fight crafty, but I bit down on my mouth piece and swung for the fences."
Mir picks up his 15th career victory in the UFC and improves to 18-9. Duffee drops to 9-3 and loses his first fight since returning to the promotion in 2012.
