Both James Moontasri and Kevin Lee joined Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) Lightweight division in 2014 and earlier tonight (Weds., July 15, 2015) at UFC Fight Night 71, each were looking to extend their respective win streaks inside Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Calif., on FOX Sports 1.
Lee, 22, who joined UFC early last year, picked up his fourth victory in five fights by submission after ending Moontasri's evening via rear-naked choke.
Lee immediately closed the distance to start the fight and stay on top of Moontasri, who threw several kicks; however, none of them found their mark. At the 3:30 mark, both fighters poked each other in the eye and referee "Big" John McCarthy halted the bout.
When the action resumed, "Motown Phenom" worked a double-leg takedown and then suplexed Moontasri to the canvas. He then transitioned to the back of Moontasri and attacked with a rear-naked choke. Lee was relentless with his attack and the end was near for "Moonwalker," who was forced to tap moments later.
The official time of the stoppage came at the 2:56 mark of the opening round.
With the victory Lee improves to 11-1 overall. He has now won four straight in UFC since losing his promotional debut to Al Iaquinta at UFC 169. Moontasri drops to 8-3.
