UFC 189 injuries and medical suspensions: Rory MacDonald, Chad Mendes face six-month sits

Now that the dust has settled and the smoke has cleared, it's time to find out who's worse for the wear following the carnage at UFC 189 this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) issued its list of injuries and medical suspensions on Monday for the mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters who participated in UFC 189, which took place last Saturday night (July 11, 2015) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

And there are a few hefty sentences.

Chief among them is Rory MacDonald, who was left a bloody mess and suffered a broke nose and right foot after his epic battle against Robbie Lawler (video replay). Judging by this photo, it's a miracle "Red King" didn't earn a longer suspension.

Joining him in the six-month club is Chad Mendes, who may have jacked up his thumb during his second-round technical knockout loss to new interim featherweight champion, Conor McGregor (watch it).

That's not all.

Here is the full list (via Sherdog) of UFC 189  injuries and medical suspensions:

Conor McGregor: Suspended until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11 for right eyebrow cut.

Chad Mendes: Must have right thumb X-rayed and cleared by doctor, or no contest until Jan. 11. Minimum suspension until Aug. 2 with no contact until July 28.

Robbie Lawler: Suspended until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11 for right lip laceration.

Rory MacDonald: Must have fractured nose and right foot cleared by doctor, or no contest until Jan. 11. Minimum suspension until Sept. 10 with no contact until Aug. 26.

Jeremy Stephens: Must have sinus/facial CT scan to rule out left orbital fracture, or no contest until Jan. 11. Minimum suspension until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11 for right lip laceration.

Dennis Bermudez: Suspended until Sept. 6 with no contact until Aug. 23 for sinus injury and right lip laceration.

Brandon Thatch: Suspended until Sept. 10 with no contact until Aug. 26.

Thomas Almeida: Must have nose X-rayed and cleared by doctor, or no contest until Jan. 11. Minimum suspension until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11 for lacerations.

Brad Pickett: Suspended until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11.

Tim Means: Must have left fifth finger X-rayed and cleared by doctor, or no contest until Jan. 11. Minimum suspension until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11 for lacerations.

Mike Swick: Suspended until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11 for chin laceration.

Enrique Briones: Must have left fifth toe X-rayed and cleared by doctor, or no contest until Jan. 11. Minimum suspension until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11 for lacerations.

Neil Seery: Suspended until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11 for left eye laceration.

Cody Pfister: Must have right knee X-ray or MRI cleared by doctor, or no contest until Jan. 11. Minimum suspension until Aug. 26 with no contact until Aug. 11.

Yosdenis Cedeno: Must have left groin cleared by doctor, or no contest until Jan. 11.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. In addition, not all injuries are recorded during the post-fight examination and often times surface in follow-up tests.
