Former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion, Michelle Waterson, made her Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut tonight (Sun., July 12, 2015) at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 21 Finale, colliding with Angela Magana in a women's Strawweight showdown.
Both ladies came into MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, looking to return to the win column. And once the dust settled it was "Karate Hottie" who emerged victorious over "Your Majesty" via third-round rear-naked choke.
Magana wasted no time getting the action started, rushing Waterson and giving her the business along the cage with some dirty boxing and Muay Thai. Waterson exploded with a hip toss, dumping Magana on her back and began to work a little ground-and-pound.
She got a little too deep, though, and Magana was able to trap her arm in a tight arm bar. Waterson stepped over to defend, but Magana continued to crank her elbow belly-down. It didn't look good, but eventually Waterson was able to wiggle her arm free from danger.
Once they returned to their feet Waterson tossed her again and landed in full mount with about 30 seconds remaining and threatened with an armbar of her own -- great first round action.
Round two was more of a striking affair early until Magana ankle-picked Waterson and dropped her on her back. Waterson didn't miss a beat, though, angling for another armbar finish. It didn't work so she settled for full mount again where she blasted Magana with short elbows.
Magana eventually escaped thanks to a leg-lock submission threat, but was unable to get back to her feet quick enough and found herself right back in full mount until the bell blared.
Waterson kicked off round three, literally, with a collection of kicks, one of which dropped Magana to the canvas. Waterson then dumped her over her shoulder and flattened out Magana, belly-down, and boxed her ears. The referee warned Magana to fight back as Waterson continued to bash her temples.
In the midst of the assault, Waterson snuck her forearm under Magana's chin to lock in a fight-ending rear-naked choke.
Impressive first Octagon impression.
