Gunnar Nelson came out at UFC 189 to get himself back into the win column and did so with a definitive victory over Brandon Thatch tonight (Sat., July 11, 2015) inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Thatch pressed forward to start things off and Nelson tried to get the fight into the clinch to keep the talented striker out of range.
Soon after, Nelson landed a huge punch that dropped Thatch and immediately jumped on him looking to finish. The Icelandic welterweight passed his guard and then transitioned right into mount.
From there, "Gunni" took Thatch's back as he was looking to escape, but Nelson's grappling was just too much and he got his arm under the Colorado fighter's chin to force the tap.
Referee Herb Dean stepped in to wave things off and the official stoppage came at the 2:54 mark of the very first round. The submission victory was the tenth of the No.15-ranked UFC welterweight's career.
Meanwhile, it marks the second loss in a row for Thatch, who was also choked out by Benson Henderson in his last fight.
