As anticipation grows for the sequel to WSOF 21 in Edmonton, which featured two title defenses and one new champion, World Series of Fighting (WSOF) has announced a new lightweight bout for its August 1st card in "Sin City."
WSOF 22: "Palhares vs. Shields," which takes place inside Planet Hollywood Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, will now feature a 155-pound showdown between submission specialist Islam Mamedov (11-1) and WSOF veteran Jimmy Spicuzza (6-2).
The fight joins a main card on NBC Sports already loaded with big fights including Rousimar Palhares defending his welterweight title against fellow UFC-import Jake Shields, while Marlon Moraes defends his bantamweight title against Sheymon Moraes, and kickboxing star Tyrone Spong goes for his third mixed martial arts (MMA) win against veteran Mike "MAK" Kyle.
Spicuzza is the winner of three out of four WSOF appearances, including an impressive first-round rear naked choke of Gil Guardado, while Mamedov is on a 10-fight winning streak, including his April 10th promotional debut where he finished Leon Davis by technical knockout in the first round.
A previously announced fight for the inaugural flyweight title between Magomed Bibulatov and Donavon Frelow has been scratched, as Bibulatov has withdrawn due to injury.
