Surprise! Fabricio Werdum head coach wants Cain Velasquez rematch

Esther Lin/MMA Fighting

Usually, instant rematches in mixed martial arts (MMA) take place when a fight ends in controversial fashion.

That wasn't the case when Fabricio Werdum beat down and eventually submitted Cain Velasquez to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in the third round headliner of UFC 188 in Mexico City, Mexico (see it again here).

Still, Rafael Cordeiro -- Fabricio's head trainer -- says Cain deserves a chance to get his title back against "Vai Cavalo" based on what the ex-ruler of the 265-pound roost did during his reign as champion.

From his appearance on The MMA Hour (via MMA Fighting):

"It's hard to say names. I believe Cain deserves a rematch because of his history as a champion. He was great. He did things in the heavyweight division nobody did, and Fabricio will start building his history in the heavyweight division. But if somebody has to fight, I believe it's Cain. He deserves [it]. I'm okay with the rematch, no problem. For everything he did in the heavyweight division, I believe he deserves a rematch."

It's a rematch Werdum himself is open to, as he declared immediately after his upset win over Cain that he would gladly give him a do-over in Las Vegas, Nevada. That way, he can prove he's the best fighter with, or without, sucking in the thin air Mexico has to offer.

No excuses!

But a instant do-over is highly-unlikely as UFC president Dana White already confirmed that either Andrei Arlovski or Stipe Miocic would get first crack at Fabricio. Nevertheless, should Cain and Werdum cross paths in the future, Cordeiro is confident his pupil can best the wrestling powerhouse once more.

And a few more times after that, if needed.
