This coming September, Bellator will head to the city that Scott Coker made synonymous with Strikeforce in an event that Spike senior vice president of sports, Jon Slusser, called Spike's "biggest event ever," at a press conference on Friday afternoon (June 19, 2015).
On September 19, 2015 Bellator will be headed to the SAP Center in San Jose, California for a unique hybrid fight card with GLORY kickboxing they are calling "Dynamite," in reference to past Japan events that featured both kickboxing and MMA.
The event will be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between current champion Liam McGeary and UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz.
For the first time, a cage and a ring will both be inside the SAP Center in what Bellator CEO Scott Coker called a "three-tiered mega event," with a light heavyweight title fight, a light heavyweight tournament and three GLORY kickboxing fights.
GLORY CEO Jon J Franklin was excited about joining up with Bellator for the September event.
"We are extremely excited to be part of this event and to be part of this massive undertaking and we want to thank Scott Coker, Jon Slusser, Kevin Kay and everyone involved for giving us the opportunity to be part of this Bellator event in San Jose," said Franklin. "It should be one of the biggest events of the year. We are going to have some great fighters and great fights."
Joe Schilling and Paul Daley have been announced for the September 19th card as a part of the kickboxing fights. There were reports on Thursday that this would be a co-promoted card between GLORY and Bellator, but it will be a Bellator event with three GLORY fights on the bill.
Also on the card, Bellator will be bringing back the one-night four-man tournament. The tournament will also be in the 205 division with Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal, Phil Davis, Linton Vassell and Emanuel Newton all taking part.
Coker noted the winner of the tournament will be fighting for the light heavyweight championship next, and the seeding for the tournament will be announced shortly. The first round of the tournament will feature two five-minute rounds and the final will be three five-minute rounds.
This announcement came before Bellator 138 tonight (Fri, June 19, 2014), featuring the heavyweight super fight pitting Ken Shamrock against Kimbo Slice.
