UFC Fight Night 65 results recap: Jake Mathews and James Vick kicked off the Fight Pass main card tonight (May 9, 2015) inside Adelaide Entertainment Centre in Adelaide, Australia, with "The Texecutioner" pulling off an impressive upset in enemy territory.
The finish may have been beautiful, but the four minutes prior had been everything but gorgeous for James Vick. Jake Matthews used his hometown crowd's atmosphere to his advantage, clipping his undefeated opponent with a left hand early.
Vick looked a bit shaken with Matthews' aggressiveness, and "The Celtic Kid" hit a beautiful slam to capitalize. As if the impact woke Vick up from a dreary haze, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) product got back to his feet and finally started to let go in the striking department.
Unfortunately for Vick, he simply could not catch Matthews, even with his significant reach advantage. After an eyepoke stopped the action momentarily, Vick's combinations started flowing. His best offense was coming in the last 30 seconds of the round, including a nice double knee.
Just as the round was coming to a close, Vick latched on to a deep guillotine, forcing the Australian to tap in front of his home crowd.
The finish came at 4:53 of the first round, and improved Vick's record to 8-0.
